Sunday 15th September 2019 - Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria

This month our walks are based on Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria.   The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00am prompt and travel to Lancaster Services. Toilets are limited in Kirkby Lonsdale so it is advisable that everybody uses the toilets and boots up at the services. All walks start and finish in Kirkby Lonsdale close to Devil’s Bridge. Boots are essential on all walks. After enjoying refreshments in Kirkby Lonsdale we will depart at 5.00pm and should be back in Formby about 7.00pm.

The cost of travel will be £16.00 for members, £18.00 for non-members, £7.00 for Leaders, £7.00 for children and students in full time education. Please note the changed coach fare. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please book by email and pay online or send in your return to the Treasurer Monica Sealey before 5th September; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 or by email monicatuk@yahoo.co.uk who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 5th September and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

‘A Walk
Distance: 10.5 miles
Ascent: 1,800 ft
Leaders:
Shaun Rollinson
Ray Webb

An irregular figure of eight walk that starts close to Devil’s Bridge.
After passing through High Casterton our route takes us across fields to Bindloss Farm (633786) and then on to Fellfoot Road.
We follow this track north for a while before heading east along Fell Road.
While the majority of the walk is largely flat and easy going, this stretch is uphill.
For those wishing to scale Brownthwaite Pike (647804) and enjoy the views from the top, it rises still further.
However, there will be scope to omit the Pike for those that wish to.
The return leg begins shortly after re-joining Fell Road and leads us back to the junction with Fellfoot Road.
At this point we head north before swinging south west through Langthwaite (632802) and on to Casterton.
The last leg skirts High Casterton on the return to Devil’s Bridge.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 575 ft
Leaders:
Maureen Jacques
Keith Jacques

A less demanding ‘B’ walk along the scenic Lune Valley with (weather permitting) some lovely views culminating in the outlook at Ruskin’s View (made famous by Turner), as we return to Kirkby Lonsdale.
From Devil’s Bridge we make our way up through the caravan park towards Casterton Golf Club before reaching the village where the Bronte sisters attended school.
We then take country lanes and fields towards Barbon where we turn towards the river once more, passing Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club before crossing the historic bridge and returning along the river to Kirkby Lonsdale.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6.5 miles
Ascent: 520 ft
Leaders:
Liz Bellman
Louise Pimm

Starting from Devil’s Bridge we walk north along a riverside path into the picturesque town of Kirkby Lonsdale, via the Radical Steps, where we can admire the architecture and also walk to Ruskin’s View, subject of a painting by Turner.
We then walk through the churchyard and take a footpath which climbs steadily to Wood End with extensive views towards Kendal.
Walking along a stream we reach Sellet Mill and cross fields to Sellet Hall with a chance to climb to the trig point at Sellet Bank.
A quiet lane brings us to the pretty village of Whittington where we take a footpath from the churchyard and make our way back to the River Lune along Burrow Mill Lane with imposing views of Ingleborough.
We then follow the Lune Valley Ramble north back to Devil’s Bridge.
There are 9 stiles in all.
