Sunday 15th March 2020 - Llangollen, North Wales

Our walks this month are based on Llangollen, North Wales. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt and travel directly to the coach park at the Aqueduct where the A and B walks will start. These parties will boot-up here and then walk to the toilets about 0.5 mile off. The C party could boot-up here but then get back on the coach to continue into Llangollen. The toilets in Llangollen are 30 pence with a man inside the entrance keeping an eye on things and offering change to put into the turnstile. We plan to leave at.4.30pm to be back in Formby about 6.30. Boots are essential on all walks, also please take notice, when walking, of the advice on likely ground conditions from the individual leaders.

The cost of travel will be £16.00 for members, £18.00 for non-members, £7.00 for Leaders, £7.00 for children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please book by email and pay online or send in your return to the Treasurer Monica Sealey before 5th March; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 (preferably by text) or by email monicatuk@yahoo.co.uk who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 5th March and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

Club Weekend 28th - 31st May 2020 is based on Criccieth North Wales. There will be walks on Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday and if there is sufficient support Sunday morning. Please book your own accomodation and notify Margaret Pegg when you have booked so we know how many people will be on the weekend.

Our walk starts from Trevor with a stroll across the aqueduct to Froncysyllte where we pick up Offa’s dyke as it runs below the aqueduct before climbing back up to cross the Llangollen canal which we meet again later.
We approach the panoramic walk through pleasant woodland at Trevor Hall before climbing up to Castell Dinas Bran.
After zigzagging down we turn north-west to follow the Clwydian way past Valle Crucis Abbey to Hen-bandy.
(No bandy hens seen on recce).
Turning south we return via Coed Hyrddyn (the velvet hill), the Chain Bridge Hotel and follow the canal back into Llangollen.

Ascent: 835 ft

David Wake

Leaving the coach park we walk about 1/2 mile to the toilets at the northern end of the Pontcysyllte aqueduct and take a walk across the aqueduct and back before starting the walk proper.
We then walk westerly along the Llangollen canal (a branch off the Shropshire canal) passing through Llangollen through to the Horseshoe Falls at the end of the canal.
This is where the River Dee feeds the canal.
A short walk back to cross the river at Chain Bridge before crossing the A5 road in Berwyn.
A little bit of road walking allows us to pick up a path climbing up to The Duke and round to Inman’s Wood then contouring along then down towards the riverside park and the end of the walk in Llangollen.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7 miles
Ascent: 900 ft
Leaders:
Denise Nunn
Barry Whitby

From the centre of Llangollen, we cross the River Dee bridge and climb up towards the steep hill topped by Dinas Bran Castle.
Weather permitting there will be some beautiful views.
This climb will be taken at a slow pace and you will have the comfort of knowing that the steep climb will be before lunch!.
We then contour the base of the hill until we meet the Offa’s Dyke Path.
We follow the Offa’s Dyke path along the base of the Eglwyseg escarpment, gaining height gradually until we descend through woods to a stream.
We follow the stream along the Clwydian Way through woodland passing the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey.
We then reach the Llangollen Canal which we follow back to the tea shop (lovely cakes and free toilets) and the facilities of Llangollen where we meet the coach.
