A walk to get the legs aching and the heart beating after the summer holiday, visiting three high points in Ambleside.
Leaving the car park we head up via Skelghyll Wood and Jenkins Crag towards the Hundreds road and to Wansfell Pike (482m /1590ft ), which towers over the town and gives (on most days) excellent views of the distant fells and lakes.
The route then follows the ridge North over Baystones towards the Troutbeck Road and to the Kirkstone Pass.
A fine stepped staircase now takes us up a further 1000 feet to the summit of Red Screes (776m /2560ft) where the views can be breathtaking (if you have any left!)
Return is down the ridge of Snarker Pike, towards Ambleside and the final high point ‘The Golden Rule’ for well earned refreshments. |

| Starting from the Hayes Garden Centre car park we walk through Ambleside and then take a footpath behind the University which leads to Low Sweden Bridge and High Sweden Bridge.
The route continues along Scandale Beck to Scandale Bottom and Scandale Pass.
We then climb up to Red Screes where there are extensive views across several lakes and fells.
Turning south we walk along the ridge of Snarker Pike and down into Ambleside and ”The Golden Rule”.

| This is a challenging circular Lakeland walk from Ambleside over Wansfell Pike, with some breathtaking views of the ‘Lakes to the Coast’.
On leaving the car park we gradually ascend along a well-defined path through Skelghyll Wood to Jenkins Crag for some fantastic views of Windermere.
This bridleway is stony, sometimes grassy and definitely muddy in places.
Crossing a ford, we continue along Robins Lane (track) to the pretty village of Troutbeck. (‘The Mortal Man’, may offer liquid refreshment and a comfort stop).
We leave Troutbeck along Nanny Lane, a well-defined footpath, cross The Hundreds, distinctly ‘boggy’ to Wansfell Pike.
Here we will take the opportunity to ‘chill’ and admire the awesome views of the; Kirkstone Pass, Fairfield Horseshoe, Easedale beck and numerous Lakes and Fells.
The descent from Wansfell Pike is made easier by; a stepped path constructed and maintained by the National Trust and the thought of well-earned liquid refreshment at The Golden Rule in Ambleside. |

| This could be called the "Waterfalls Walk" and is at its best after prolonged rain.
It makes a very pleasant outing with varied scenery whatever the conditions.
Starting at Ambleside the walk takes us alongside Stock Ghyll where we should be able to get a good view of the falls.
Leaving the falls, we make our way to High Sweden Bridge by a roundabout route of woodland, fell and field paths and some road walking.
We cross High Sweden Bridge (a very pleasant spot) and climb up to reach a track which takes us down to Low Sweden Bridge (more waterfalls) and then we return to the car park via a walk alongside the River Rothay.
