Sunday 24th June 2018 - Appleby, Cumbria

This month our walks are based on Appleby in Cumbria.  The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. After a toilet and boot stop, the coach will travel to Dufton where the A and B+ walks start.  The coach will continue to Appleby where the other two walks start and all the walks finish. The area is likely to be very wet underfoot and Boots are essential on all walks.  We will leave Appleby at 5:30pm arriving back in Formby about 7.30pm

The cost of travel will be £11.00 for members, £14.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education.  Please make your cheques payable to Range Walking Club and ensure they are signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please book by email and pay online or send in your return to the Treasurer Monica Sealey before 14th June; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 or by email monicatuk@yahoo.co.uk who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 14th June and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 12.5 miles
Ascent: 2,100 ft
Leaders:
John Roberts
Richard Roberts

We start from Dufton climbing steadily to the east of Dufton Pike before climbing more steeply up through mine working towards Great Rundale Tarn .
Picking up the outflow  we follow it down to Maizebeck Bridge and turn southwest to High Cup Nick  before dropping down into the south side of the valley and continuing into Appleby via meadows and woodland.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 10.5 miles
Ascent: 2,100 ft
Leaders:
Margaret Pegg
Edwina Roberts

From Dufton the route is directly east along the Pennine Way, past Bow Hall 702250 and Peeping Hill to High Cup Nick.
This is a gentle climb of about 1600ft with two short steep bits, finishing on the edge of the level band of resistant volcanic rock, which is the cause of this unusual valley.
The route continues down along the south side of High Cup Gill to Harbour Flatt farm 722232.
After the farm we follow the road a short distance before taking the footpath past Castle Hill and through Flakebridge Wood to Appleby.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 800 ft
Leaders:
Sarah Broad
Denise Nunn

This is a circular walk, starting from Appleby and taking in many different terrains.
We go over a number of stiles (around 14), however we hope that the Flora and Fauna that we will view makes up for the muddy paths and stile clambering. (On the recce we were even lucky enough to see some Roe Deer).
We start the walk from Appleby, heading out on a couple of roads and lanes until we reach a stile, which we go over and then cross fields until we reach the River Eden.
Once alongside the River Eden, we follow it for quite a while, heading South until we reach some steps which we climb up away from the river.
We continue towards Great Ormside, crossing the river on a couple of occasions and then head on a road towards Rutter Force, a very powerful waterfall and great photo opportunity!
From Rutter Force, we head back up north following footpaths alongside Hoff Beck to Hoff. From Hoff we cross fields and follow bridleways back into Appleby..
