Sunday 15th April 2018 - Hayfield, Derbyshire

This month our walks are based on Hayfield and Kinder Scout in Derbyshire.  The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. Boots are essential on all walks.  There will be no stop enroute as there are adequate toilets in Hayfield, where all walks start and finish and there is a good choice of refreshments for the end of the day. We plan to leave at 5.30pm  to be back in Formby about 7.00 pm.

The cost of travel will be £11.00 for members, £14.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education.  Please make your cheques payable to Range Walking Club and ensure they are signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please book by email and pay online or send in your return to the Treasurer Monica Sealey before 5th April; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 or by email monicatuk@yahoo.co.uk who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 5th April and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 12 miles
Ascent: 2,000 ft

John Hughes

Leaving Hayfield on Kinder Road we will pause at Bowden Bridge where the famous (among walkers ) Kinder Trespass started in 1932. Reaching  Kinder Reservoir we contour on a good path to William Clough.
Now we ascend through a narrowing valley crossing the small stream several times on stepping stones, until we reach the Pennine Way at Ashop Head.
An undulating path follows the plateau edge for about 3 miles through spectacular millstone tors, crossing Kinder Downfall and providing panoramic views ( on the recce anyway! ).
We call at our high point of Kinder Low 2080 ft before descending via Edale Rocks to follow a lower level ridge over South Head and Mount Famine before dropping down to the Sett valley and Hayfield.

‘B+’ Walk

Ascent: 1,650 ft

This walk takes us to the edge of the Kinder Plateau, providing excellent 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside.
We start by walking eastwards out of Hayfield towards Elle Bank woods, a gradual climb on good paths takes us past Coldwell Clough to Edale Cross.
We then join the Pennine Way and climb towards Kinder Low, to Kinder Downfall. Continuing along the Pennine way (whilst enjoying the views), we leave the plateau and head towards the picturesque Kinder Reservoir.
From there we follow the Kinder Road back into Hayfield.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 1,200 ft
Leaders:
Dave Willis
Trevor Ludlow

We leave Hayfield on the old Highgate road, climbing all the way before joining the Pennine Bridleway to South Head.
The bulk of the climbing is now complete and we will have a coffee break with far reaching views to the south.
We continue over open moorland (partway on a good flagstone path) gradually climbing to reach our high point of the day below Brown Knoll, with 360 degree panoramic views all the way.
The lunch stop will be at the head of the Jacobs Ladder path coming up from Edale, a daunting climb for those coming up!
We start our return leg (downhill most of the way) by contouring Kinderlow End and then heading towards Manchester (in the distance!).
We now leave the open access moorland to finish the last 2 km by walking down the river Kinder valley to the tea rooms of Hayfield.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 750 ft
Leaders:
Denice Nunn
Barry Whitby

From the coach we walk through Hayfield and out along Kinder Road.
On leaving the road we follow the Snake Path as far as White Brow climbing all the time.
This is the main climb of the day and for our efforts we will be rewarded, weather permitting, with good views overlooking Kinder Reservoir and across to the Kinder Downfall.
After retracing our steps, for a short distance, we take a moorland track heading north west across to Carr Meadow Farm on the Glossop to Hayfield road.
Now for a change in terrain as we cross farmland, walk tracks and country lanes below Lantern Pike over to the Sett Valley Trail.
This former rail-track we then follow for approx. ¾ of a mile back to the coach.
