Sunday 16th October 2016 - Bakewell, Derbyshire

This month our walks are based on Grasmere in the Lake District where all the walks start and finish. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt and travel to Burton Services for a toilet/boot up stop.  Boots are essential on all walks. At the end of the walk in Grasmere there are plenty of opportunities for refreshments.  We plan to leave at 5.30 pm to be back in Formby about 7.30pm

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 or by email monicatuk@yahoo.co.uk who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 10th September and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

We start our tour of Derbyshire villages by climbing out of Bakewell in an easterly direction crossing the Monsal Trail and walking through Manners Wood and over Calton Pastures.
Turning north-easterly we go into New Piece Wood.
When we leave the wood we get our first sighting of Chatsworth House- a great photo opportunity.
We descend into the delightful village of Edensor and onto the Derwent Valley Heritage Trail which we follow along the river until reaching Calton Lees and Rowsley.
Heading south west out of Rowsley we make our way along fields and tracks to Congreve and onto Stanton in Peak.
Heading north we pass Shining Bank limestone quarry on our way to Haddon Fields- again another photo opportunity for Haddon Hall, as we descend towards the main road.
A short walk (100m)along the road pathway leads us into the riverside path back into Bakewell.

We leave Bakewell crossing the bridge over the river Wye then make our way eastwards steadily uphill over the golf course and through woodland to Calton Pastures.
Here we turn south east across the pastures to more woodland and downhill to Rowsley.
Turning north we pick up the Derwent Valley Heritage Way following the river upstream through pastures to the pretty hamlet of Calton Lees.
From here we walk along the river bank through parkland, with views of Chatsworth House to our right over the river, until we reach the old bridge which gives access to the House.
We don’t cross the bridge but turning west we enter the estate village of Edensor with its magnificent church and stone houses.
The road through Edensor becomes a stony track rising steadily uphill to Ballcross Farm where we descend through the woodland, back down the golf course and into Bakewell.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7.25 miles
Ascent: 600 ft
Leaders:

Steve Wright

From the coach we make our way to the old railway station where we follow the dismantled railway along Coombs road.
We then drop down via field paths to follow the river Wye until we reach the main A6.
A short walk on a footpath by the A6 leads us to the entrance to Haddon Hall.
We then cross the road and follow field paths round the edge of Haddon plantation and onwards in the direction of the river Lathkill.
Before we reach the river we turn north west and make our way to Over Haddon where, if time permits, there is the possibility of refreshments at the Lathkill Hotel.
From Over Haddon we follow a minor road before taking field paths down to a school where we pass tennis courts, and after a short distance we find a path between houses onto a minor road and make our way into the centre of Bakewell.
