Sunday 20th September 2015 - Borrowdale, North Lakes

This month our walks are based in Borrowdale and around Keswick. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.  The coach will go direct to Keswick as there are toilets at the start of all walks.  The B and C walkers will leave the coach at Keswick, the other walkers should stay on the coach until Grange in Borrowdale for the B+ and Seatoller for the A group.  All walks finish in Keswick where plenty of refreshment opportunities are available for the end of the day.  We plan to leave at 5.30pm and should be back in Formby by 7.45pm

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please send in your return to the Treasurer before 10th September; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 or by email monicatuk@yahoo.co.uk who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 10th September and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

Leadership and Navigation Skills Course:  October 2015
A short Leadership and Navigation Skills course is being run by Margaret Pegg, David Wake and Dave Purdy during October 2015.  All members who are interested in learning more about map reading and GPS are welcome to attend.

The Walking Partnership:
Range Walking Club has recently joined The Walking Partnership. This partnership supported by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays provides direct financial contributions to local walking groups. When you book if you quote the name of our group, we will then receive a contribution of £10 per person on UK holidays, £20 per person on short haul holidays, and £30 per person on long haul holidays.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 2500 ft
Leaders:
Andy Fowler
A N Other

We leave the coach at Seatoller and pick up the Cumbria Way in a northerly direction.
At Scaleclose Coppice we start our ascent by skirting around High Scawdel and heading for Wilson’s Bield for the main ascent to High Spy.
From here we head north along the ridge with great views in all directions.
On reaching Bull Crag we descend to Hause Gate before climbing again, over Cat Bells.
From Cat Bells we descend and pick up the Cumbria Way again until the Tower when we skirt around the northern headland of Derwentwater back to the coach park.

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 1900 ft
Leaders:
Margaret Pegg
Edwina Roberts

On leaving the coach we walk through the pretty village of Grange and then start the ascent up to the ridge path. The ascent which is steep will be taken slowly with several stops on the way to enjoy the wonderful views over Borrowdale and Derwent water.

The route northwards along the ridge goes passed Bull Crag, Maiden Moor and down to Hause Gate before starting the ascent of Cat Bells. The view of mountains and lakes from the top of Cat Bells is magnificent.  Following the steep descent from Cat Bells we follow the Cumbrian Way through woods to Portinscale and round to Keswick.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8.7 miles
Ascent: 1050 ft
Leaders:
David Wake
Gill Hickmott

Starting from Booths car park we walk to Briar Rigg then follow the Cumbria Way in a north easterly direction climbing steadily up to a car park.
Here at the highest point of the walk we turn to the west along a minor road and a green lane to pass through Applethwaite, Millbeck and Dancing Gate where we head south through low lying fields to Bog House (herein lies a clue to the nature of the fields!) and How farm.
The walk continues alongside the river Derwent to Portinscale and then along a footpath back into Keswick.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7.2 miles
Ascent: 830 ft
Leaders:
Julie Cork
Liz Bellman

The C walk which starts from the car park at Booths is gentle with a very gradual ascent.
We walk  towards Keswick Leisure Centre to  pick up the disused railway line that meanders across the River Greta, crossing at various points over three sturdy bridges and a boardwalk.
There are many points of interest along this flat route including a railway man’s hut and the best concrete engineering award.

Turning off the disused railway line the route takes us across fields and some roads to Castlerigg Stone Circle where we plan to stop for lunch.
After lunch the path continues across fields and across the A591 back into Keswick.
There are glorious views along the way and a breathtaking one of Derwentwater and Catbells.
There is also an optional detour to a viewpoint.
