Club Weekend 2015: 5th-7th June
The Club Weekend on the 5th-7th June 2015 will based in St David’s on the Pembrokeshire Coast.   A booking has been made for a group meal on Saturday 6th June in the Grove Hotel High Street St David’s SA62 6SB 01437 720341. At present there are 6 rooms available at the Grove Hotel.

Attached is a list of some of the other hotels and guest houses in St Davids.  They all seem to be fairly small so there will probably be a need for us to stay in separate places.  However, since The Grove Hotel is on the High Street it will be an easy place for us all to meet throughout the weekend.  Since St David’s is a small city it is advisable to book as soon as possible to be close to the centre.  If you are booking The Grove Hotel please mention that you are part of the group booked by Margaret.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 12.5 miles
Ascent: 2700 ft
Leaders:

A N Other

The Calf and Cautley Spout.

This is the classic high level walk on the Howgills, a favourite excursion and the most well-known, with some very diverse scenery and good mountain walking.
Starting from the car park by the information centre in Sedbergh we turn right out of the car park and start our ascent up Joss Lane, through the houses and onto the open fell.  We pass under Winder before taking the main track to Arant Haw (605m), Calders (674m) and Bram Rig Top (672m) before reaching The Calf at 676m.
The descent takes us past tarns and down into Bowderdale as far as Rams Gill before heading south to meet up with the main track coming down from the famous Cautley Spout waterfall.
This is quite spectacular, even with low amounts of water and is surrounded by a huge gorge.
We then head down towards the Cross Keys returning via track and path via Fawcett Bank, Thursgill and Underbank into Sedbergh.

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 2000 ft
Leaders:
Dave Purdy
Eddy Drala

From the coach park in Sedbergh we climb northwards following Settlebeck Gill to eventually reach the summit of Arant Haw.
This section of the walk is a steady climb of 2 miles on stony & grassy paths & will be taken at a moderate pace. Subject to the weather the views in all directions make up for the exertion.
From Arant Haw the route proceeds westerly on an undulating grassy ridge before descending from the Nab to Craggstone Wood (lookout for the four small gravestones here) and eventually linking up with the Dales Way at Bramaskew. Once on the Dales Way we follow it all the way back to Sedbergh via Lincoln’s Inn Bridge, The Oaks, the banks of the River Rawthey & the grounds of Sedbergh School.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8.5 miles
Ascent: 1500 ft
Leaders:
Ray Webb
Liz Bellman

Climbing out of Sedbergh we follow the contours beneath Crook (665935) before tackling the ascent of Sickers Fell (670944).
From the fell top we move on to Knott (675942) and then descend south to Ashbeck Gill and continue on to Ghyll Farm (670930).
After swinging east through Hollin Hill and Ellerthwaite, the last section of the walk then follows the River Rawthey back to Sedbergh.
At 6½ miles this might appear a gentle autumn stroll.
There is, however, a fair bit of climbing involved, the majority of which is in the first couple of hours.
Weather permitting the views from the fell tops should make the effort worthwhile.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6.5 miles
Ascent: 400 ft
Leaders:
Glennis Poole
Janet Purdy

When the coach calls at Burton Services “C” walkers should use the facilities, put on boots and retrieve their rucksacks.
The walk starts from a small layby on the A684 near Lily Mere House. From this high point on the moors we have dramatic views of the Howgills all around us.
The down side is that it is a bit boggy! Gradually losing height we descend through fields and woodland via New Field and through Hawkrigg Wood to cross the River Lune at Lincoln’s Inn Bridge.
We then follow the Dales Way to The Oaks.
A short walk along the road brings us to the River Rawthey and we follow the river bank into Sedbergh skirting the grounds of Sedbergh School.
