Sunday 21st June 2015 - Broughton in Furness, Cumbria

This month our walks are based on Broughton in Furness Cumbria.  The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt and travel to Burton Services for a toilet/boot up stop.  Boots are essential on all walks. The C walkers will be dropped off on the way to Broughton, all the other walks start in Broughton. At the end of the day’s walks there are several pubs and cafes for refreshment in Broughton in Furness.  We plan to leave at 5.30 pm to be back in Formby about 8.00 pm

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please send in your return to the Treasurer before 11th June; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 809287 who will endeavour to substitute your booking from the waiting list.  If you cancel after 7th May and it is not possible to fill your place on the coach, regrettably, we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

Club Weekend 2015: 5th-7th June St David’s Pembrokeshire
I confirm that we will meet, to discuss the walks, at The Grove Hotel, High Street, St David’s SA62 6SB 01437 720341 on Friday 5th June at 9pm.  Most people are travelling down on the Friday, since it is a long drive, we are not planning to do an organised walk on the Friday.  However, if anybody wants to do a short walk on the Friday afternoon please let me know. I hope everybody has a good journey to St David’s.

Club AGM Monday 13th July
The Club AGM will be held on Monday 13th July at Range High School.  Membership cards will be issued from 7pm onwards and the meeting will commence at 7.30pm.  The AGM papers will be circulated nearer the time.

‘A’ Walk Distance: 12 miles Ascent: 2,000 ft Leaders: Andy Fowler Jane Fowler	We leave the centre of Broughton in a north easterly direction along fields and woodlands gently climbing to Appletree Worth before turning north west through the forest.  Here we climb onto the fells and get great views of the coastline and the Southern Lakes before turning south and making our descent through the Dunnerdale Fells valley heading towards Broughton Mills. We continue along fields into Broughton.
‘B+’ Walk Distance: 10.5 miles Ascent:1300ft Leaders: Margaret Pegg Trevor Ludlow	This delightful walk goes through very varied countryside with good views of the fells and Duddon Sands. Walking north through West Park we follow the contour lines through fields to the bridge over the River Lickle at Croglinhurst. The next section of the walk goes up to Hawes and onto the fells where we go past Great Stickle and Yew Barrow on our way to Ulpha Bridge.  Turning south west there is a short road walk before going into the woods in Ulpha Park.  After the woods we cross back over the River Duddon at Rawfold Bridge and continue up and over Rawfold Bank back to the River Lickle valley which we cross on our way into Broughton.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 8 miles Ascent: 1,140 ft Leaders: Gill Hickmott David Wake	We leave Broughton in an easterly direction over fields, woodland and the low lying Black Moss (a bit damp in places) before zig-zagging up onto Thornthwaite Latter Rigg and open moorland. Dropping down to Thornthwaite and more woodland we turn northwards up onto more open moorland before reaching Green Moor farm then through woods to Hawes followed by more open fields to Bridge End farm. Here turning south-westwards we have a short road climb and then a track through yet more woods to Brookside and the final ascent of the day to Moss Side farm. Our path is now through pastureland, a short section of woodland to Broughton Tower and back into Broughton.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 7 miles Ascent: 950/650 ft Leaders: David Poole Glennis Poole	The walk starts on the main road between Beanthwaite and Gawthwaite where the coach will drop us off.  We walk generally northwards on a very minor unfenced road with extensive views over a wide area of Lakeland.  At the Giants Grave we have the option of going up Blawith Knott where the views can be even more spectacular.  We then re-join the road for a short distance before passing Woodland Hall and crossing Thornthwaite Latter Rigg.  After crossing a footbridge over Kirkby Pool we make our way to Broughton in Furness via Wall End.
