Sunday 18th November 2012 - Arnside

On Sunday 18th November there will be three walks, all finishing at Arnside where there are cafes and pubs for refreshments at the end of the day.  The “A” & “C” walks are circular, starting & finishing at Arnside. The “B” walk however is linear, starting from a point on the A6 near Pine Lakes.

The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.. Although there are toilets at Arnside for the “A” & “C” groups ( bring some change!!), there are none at the start of the “B” walk, so a brief toilet stop will be made at Lancaster Services (Forton) on the M6 for the comfort of “B” walkers who should also “boot-up” & retrieve rucksacks at the same time.

We plan to leave Arnside at 5.00 pm to be back in Formby about 7.30 pm. 

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please Note returns should go to the Treasurer. Please send in your return before 8th November; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

‘A’ Walk Distance: 10 miles Ascent: 1400 ft Leaders: Ken Bryning Bob Scurr	Starting from SD456788 (the Pier) we head SW along the coast to New Barns before heading South up through the woods to Arnside Knott (159m), where on a good day …..A panorama awaits.  Moving on we drop down passing Arnside Tower (a Pele tower) on the way to the Pepper Pot at the summit of Castlebarrow (built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria). We then walk East  through Eaves wood, cross the railway to skirt Hawes Water (NO – not the reservoir under High Street) but Hawes Water Moss nature reserve, heading to Hazelslack and on towards the Fairy Steps. Legend has it that the fairies will grant you a wish if you are able to climb the steps without touching the sides of the narrow limestone gully - we will see! The return is via Storth and the disused railway track along the coast to Arnside.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 9 miles Ascent: 1000 ft Leaders: Dave Purdy Ray Webb	A linear walk that commences at Pine Lake (M6, junction 35a) and finishes along the banks of Morecombe Bay at Arnside.  It will be undulating, probably wet underfoot in places and will take us into or close to Warton, Yealand Conyers, Leighton Moss, Hawes Water, Eaves Wood and Arnside Knott Wood.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 6.5/8 miles Ascent: 600/800 ft Leaders: Janet Purdy Glennis Poole	This is a varied walk with an opportunity of extensive views over the estuary to Grange-over-Sands and the mountains of the Lake District. Starting at Arnside we walk along the coastal path then woodland and cliff top paths to Far Arnside. We follow well made paths to Elmslack and walk through Eaves Wood and after carefully crossing the railway line skirt Middlebarrow Wood to visit Arnside Tower. A gradual ascent through Arnside Knott Wood brings us to a parting of the ways where the party may split into two. One group may wish to climb an extra few hundred feet to the top of Arnside Knott with it’s commanding view and toposcope. The remaining group will continue to walk down back into Arnside.
