Sunday 21st July 2013 - Kendal, South Lakes

This month our walks are based on Kendal. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.  There will be a brief stop enroute at Burton Services on the M6 for toilets and booting up.   After the services the first group to leave the bus will be the ‘C’ walkers who start the walk at Sizergh Castle.  The coach will continue to Kendal where the ‘B’ group start walking and then on to Hucks Bridge on the A6 North of Kendal where the ‘A’ walkers start to walk..  Both B and C walks finish in Kendal and will be picked up by the coach at 5.00 pm.   The coach will then drive to Staveley to collect the ‘A’ party and depart from there by 5.30 pm before returning to Formby by 7.30pm.

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please send in your return to the Treasurer at 19 Burlington Ave Formby before 11th April; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Cancellations: if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 871308 who will endeavour to substitute your booking from any waiting list. If this is not possible, then regrettably we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

The July walk is the last walk of the season.  The 2013/14 season starts with a walk in Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales on the 15th September and the details will be published on the 29th August.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 12 miles
Ascent: 2000 ft
Leaders:
John & Edwina Roberts
Jane & Andy Fowler

This walk is an abbreviated version of the 1991 Luty/Spence classic starting at Hucks Bridge on the A6 north of Kendal.
It takes in four of Wainwright’s ‘outlying fells’ starting with a gradual ascent of High House Bank and following the ridge to Robin Hood and Lords Seat before turning west and then south  to Capplebarrow.
Once there we drop down into Longsledale before climbing back up into Staveley for refreshments at the end of the walk.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 10.3 miles
Ascent: 750 ft
Leaders:
David Wake
A N Other

This circular walk starts in Kendal and follows the river Kent south to Scroggs Wood.
We cross the A6 and then go under the A591 to take field paths in a south westerly direction past Low house and up to Toposcope overlooking the Lyth Valley.
More tracks and field paths bring us to Sizergh Castle and on to Nannypie Lane and a suspension bridge over the river Kent.
The walk continues alongside the river and then  the canal (disused and infillled) back into Kendal.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7.5 miles
Ascent: 950 ft
Leaders:
David Poole
Steve Wright

The ‘C’ walk this month is a repeat of one the club last did in 1994.
Starting at Sizergh Castle the walk continues to St. John's church where we will stop for a few minutes. It then continues along Scout Scar, where we have lunch, probably at the ‘mushroom’, before we proceed to Cunswick Scar before turning into Kendal via the golf course.
The views in good weather, are superb.
There are no pubs or cafes on the route but there is a choice of  refreshments in Kendal.
