Sunday 17th February 2013 - South Lakes

On Sunday 17th February there will be three walks, all finishing at the Gilpin Bridge Inn where we will have our “Hot Pot Supper”. The “B” & “C” walks are circular, starting & finishing at the Inn. The “A” walk is linear, starting from Sizergh Castle.  The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt and there will be a toilet stop at Burton In Kendal services.  We plan to start eating at 5 -5.30pm and expect to leave at 7 -7.30pm thus arriving back in Formby by 9pm.  There is a need to pre order and pay in advance and the menu is attached.
 
The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Those who paid for the January walk do not need to pay for the coach this time as the money already collected has been carried forward.  Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please send in your return to the Treasurer at 19 Burlington Ave Formby before 7th February, places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.  Cancellations, if you need to cancel or make a late booking, please contact the Treasurer on 01704 871308 who will endeavour to substitute your booking from any waiting list. If this is not possible, then regrettably we will not be able to give you a refund as coaches will have been booked on initial returns.

 

NOTICES

Club 35th Anniversary:  Friday 22nd March 2013
This year is the Club’s 35th anniversary, which we are celebrating with a ceilidh and hot-pot supper on Friday 22nd March 2013 at the Gild Hall Formby.  Music will be provided by “The Travelling People” with Kevin Bargen calling.  The hot-pot will be provided by Gillions of Crosby.
There will be a vegetarian option and all meals will be followed by a dessert. Please indicate on the reply slip the number of vegetarian meals required. 

The evening will commence at 7.30pm and continue until 11.30pm.   All walkers are welcome to attend and can be accompanied by guests.  The ticket price is £16.00 per person.  Tickets will be issued on a first come first served basis and distributed nearer to the time.

First Aid Talk:  Monday 25th February 2013
We have arranged for a Paramedic to deliver a First Aid Talk which will be held at Range High School from 7.30pm to 9.00pm on the 25th February.  The talk will be open to all walkers and there will be a nominal charge of £1 per person. The content will include: Dealing with Medical Emergencies when hill walking; Reviewing the contents of our First Aid kits and explaining how to use the various contents.  

Club Bank Holiday Weekend: 24th-27th May 2013 Twenty people have already booked, but there is no limit on numbers and all walkers are welcome. Details.

March and April walks: The details of the 17th March walk which is in Ilkley will be published on 28th February.  It has been decided to change the location of the April walk to Tideswell in Derbyshire.

‘A’ Walk Distance: 12 miles Ascent: 1200 ft Leaders: John Hughes Lynn Smith	We begin our walk at the historic Sizergh Castle, then on to Scout Scar, which is a limestone Ridge. From the top of the scar, there is a 360 degree panoramic view of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire. Along the way, we will visit St. John’s church at Helsington, for a view of an interesting WW1 memorial. We continue along the top of the scar, with the Lyth valley below us and views behind to Morecambe Bay.   Through woods and some pretty hamlets we reach the village of Brigsteer, then on to the ancient woodland of Brigsteer Park.  Finally, we cross the Lyth Valley to our final destination, the Gilpin Bridge Inn for our hotpot supper.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 10 miles Ascent: 1000 ft Leaders: Ian Currie Gordon Spence	This walk is on good paths and quiet lanes throughout, with the usual few muddy sections of course! Starting from the Gilpin Bridge Inn we head south-west to Mill Side, Birks farm and Halecat House. Turning north through pleasant woods we soon reach Yewbarrow with its open views over Morecambe Bay. After a stop we continue to Witherslack Hall, walking through the school wood to Bell Rake. We have a short steep zig zag path to ascend Whitbarrow Scar which opens up to exceptional views of the southern Lake District fells and a gently rising path to the summit, Lord’s Seat (700 ft, 215m).  After a stop on top there is a beautiful hour’s walk through, not on, the limestone pavements of the National Nature Reserve before dropping down back to Mill Side and our return to the Inn.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 8 miles Ascent: 640 ft Leaders: Joe Pearson Linda Trollope	This is a circular walk, from the friendly hotel at Gilpin Bridge Inn where we will have an evening meal. Starting our walk on the level, we go over the River Gilpin and then cross Lord’s Plain with, weather permitting, magnificent views ahead to the Lakeland Fells. We eventually reach Brigsteer and our first, not too arduous climb. We continue through woodland and open fields (NT property) over the brow to Sizergh Castle, where we have been informed that the cafe and toilets should be available! Swinging round we return with another short climb hopefully with views of ancient cairns en route. However, if the weather is inclement we can descend to plain by a more direct route. Our climbs offer great panoramic views across Morecombe Bay and also inland, for very modest climbing, just enough to build our up appetite.
