Sunday 21st April 2013 - Tideswell, Derbyshire

On Sunday 21st April there will be four walks, all finishing in Tideswell where there are cafes and pubs for refreshments at the end of the day. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt and drive straight to Tideswell as there are toilets in Tideswell. We plan to leave Tideswell at 5.30 pm to be back in Formby about 8.00 pm. 

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for members, £13.00 for non-members and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education. Please make your cheque payable to Range Walking Club and ensure it is signed as it is inconvenient for the Treasurer to chase up such omissions.

Please send in your return to the Treasurer at 19 Burlington Ave Formby before 11th April; places will be booked on the coach by the treasurer on a first come first served basis.

Leaders Meeting: Monday 20th May
As already arranged, the Leaders Meeting is on Monday 20th May at ‘The Pinewoods’ commencing at 8pm.  We do hope all leaders will be able to attend so they can contribute to next season’s plans.

Club Bank Holiday Weekend: 24th-27th May 2013
The destination for our annual ‘Weekend Away’  in May is Hereford which is close to many & varied walks in and around the beautiful Wye Valley.  All members, family & friends, are welcome to come along and enjoy the walks and/or sightsee in and around the city.  We all make our own way, in our own transport (sometimes car sharing) to Hereford.  We also book our own accommodation.   A list of accommodation is attached or you may wish to find alternatives via the web.

The proposed programme for the weekend is as follows:
Fri              9pm                 Meet at the Green Dragon Hotel Hereford for briefing on walks etc. 
If you can’t make it before 10pm, we can arrange to let you know arrangements by mobile up to 11pm
Sat / Sun   10am-4pm      Whole day walks on 2 levels as appropriate
Mon           9.30am            Half day walks arranged as required before heading for home.

On Saturday evening (approx 7pm) there will be a group meal at The Green Dragon Hotel Hereford.  The hotel would like us to pre-book this meal so Jean will email the menu, in a week or two, to all those going on the weekend.  On Sunday evening you can eat at the Green Dragon Hotel or arrange your own meal.

‘A’ Walk Distance: 11 miles Ascent: 1500 ft Leaders: John & Edwina Roberts Margaret Pegg	Leaving Tideswell we follow Church Lane to Litton.  We then walk across fields and descend Tansley Dale to join Cressbrook Dale and walk to the mill.  Turning west we wind our way along Water-cum–Jolly Dale and Millers Dale.  We climb up the southern bank of the river Wye where we have superb views of Miller’s Dale and we first encounter the tunnels on the Monsal Trail which we join opposite Litton Mill continuing as far as Wyedale. A climb up to Mosley farm enables us to return via Wormhill and Monk’s Dale Nature Reserve crossing the upper reaches of Monk’s Dale before strolling into Tideswell.
‘B+’ Walk Distance: 10.5 miles Ascent: 1000 ft Leaders: Andy Fowler Jane Fowler	Heading east out of Tideswell we walk along tracks to Litton before crossing fields into Cressbrook Dale and deciduous woodland. On arriving at Cressbrook we cross the river and climb to the railway line (disused) before heading west along the Monsal Trail through two railway tunnels – Cressbrook tunnel and Litton tunnel. Crossing the river again at Ravenstor we continue along the north bank of the river until reaching a junction with the road. We climb here along a good track onto the Limestone Way before heading north east across fields back into Tideswell.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 9 miles Ascent: 1250 ft Leaders: David Wake Alan Thomas	We leave Tideswell in a south-westerly direction along Slancote Lane, then across fields to meet the Limestone Way which we follow to the south down to Miller’s Dale. From here we walk up the road to Miller’s Dale Railway Station (disused). This gives access onto the Monsal trail along the old railway line, a flat, hard surfaced track that leads us eastwards and then down to Litton Mill. A path alongside the river Wye brings us to Cressbrook where we turn northwards up Cressbrook Dale, then west into the very short Tansley Dale and across fields to Litton. A short road walk then brings us back to Tideswell.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 6.5 miles Ascent: 800 ft Leaders: David Poole Glennis Poole	On leaving the village of Tideswell, we climb slowly up to Church Lane and head eastwards to the small village of Litton and then our path takes us downhill into Tansley Dale.   On reaching Cressbrook Dale we head south to Cressbrook village and its imposing mill, where we join the aptly named Miller’s Dale.   This spectacular limestone dale is followed westwards to the hamlet of Litton Mill and then a very gentle path up Tideswell Dale completes the circuit back to our starting point where pubs and tea shops provide welcome respite before the journey home.
