Sunday 25th September 2011 - Coniston, Lake District

On Sunday, 25 September, our walks are based at Coniston in the Lake District.

The coach will leave as usual from school at 8am prompt and travel direct to Coniston without a stop en route as there are adequate toilets in Coniston, where all walks start and end. There is a good choice of refreshments etc in the village.  We plan to leave Coniston at 5.30pm arriving back in Formby at approx 7.45pm traffic permitting.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 3500 ft

Heading north-west on good paths we soon begin to climb Lad Stones ridge to Wetherlam (2502 ft) and the start of our stunning high level walk.
The first leg is on rough stony paths,  descending to Swirl Hause , followed by an envigourating ascent of the Prison Band to Swirl How (2630ft).
Turning south on a wide ridge  we include Brim Fell on the  2 mile walk to The old Man (2633ft).
Our route back to Coniston is by Goat’s Water, for close-up views of Dow Crags, and then to follow the Walna Scar Road ,which is only a road in name being mostly an uneven and stony track .
Overall  this is a challenging walk and  the route back may need to be shortened on the day.

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 9½ miles
Ascent: 2200 ft

Not only is this a delightful walk but it has a stile count of zero!
Although never exceeding 1500 ft, there is no shortage of scenic views across Coniston Water. Initially heading SW from Coniston, via Heathwaite, height is gained very gradually, eventually passing through Boulder Valley up to the natural amphitheatre at Levers Water.
At the head of Coppermines Valley, there are interesting remains of quarrying to be seen before the route crosses over to pick up Hole Rake, beneath the Furness Fells.
At the top of tumbling Tilberthwaite Gill the path descends to High Tilberthwaite and the return leg follows Yewdale Beck, later joining the Cumbria Way back into Coniston.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8½ miles
Ascent: 1000 ft

This is a walk of pleasing contrasts.
Starting from Coniston we make our way, with the C group, steadily up a minor road, parting from them having then achieved our main climb of the day, with a great view of Coniston Old Man.
Progress continues along its flank through moorland, following an ancient pathway dating back even as early as the Bronze Age and showing evidence of its volcanic riches on the way.
Eventually we reach a cascading stream along whose banks we descend to Torver.
Look out for Nature triumphing over manmade scars in the form of a pretty waterfall escaping from the stream into an abandoned quarry.
The scenery becomes more pastoral. Onward, past a bygone mill at Mill Bridge and, after a very short, careful walk along an A road, we turn to cross a common and descend to the banks of picturesque Lake Coniston thence along a lakeside path, passing Coniston Hall en route where we veer inland across fields which lead us back to Coniston village.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6½ miles.
Ascent: 600 ft

We start this season with a delightful circular walk from Coniston.
From the centre we head out of the village by minor road up towards the Old Man, this is the first of the climbs on this walk which will be taken as usual at an easy pace.
We then turn off and cross fields towards Heathwaite farm.
Then by track and path we head southwest past little Arrow Intake, which involves the second climb but we should get (weather permitting) great views of Coniston Water.
After crossing Torver Beck we head down to Crook, past Brackenbarrow Farm and down to Coniston Water. We then walk along the edge of Coniston Water back into Coniston.
