Sunday 26th September 2011 - Clapham, Yorkshire Dales

On Sunday, 16 October, our walks are based at Clapham for the Yorkshire Dales
The coach will leave as usual from school at 8am prompt and travel direct to Clapham without a stop en route. There are toilet facilities in the coach park and all walks will start and end here. There is a good choice of refreshments etc in the village.  We plan to leave Clapham at 5.00pm arriving back in Formby at approx 7.00pm, traffic permitting.

The cost of travel will be £10.00 for adults, £13.00 for guests (see below) and £5.00 for Leaders, children and students in full time education.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 10½ miles
Ascent: 2200 ft
Leaders:
Ken Bryning
Bob Scurr

A classic ascent of one of the finest peaks in Yorkshire is the literal and actual 'highpoint' of this walk.
Starting in Clapham village (OS Outdoor Leisure 2 – NY 745692), we start with a gentle walk up through the grounds of Ingleborough Hall (small charge of 40p per person - please bring some change!), past the ornamental lake, Ingleborough Cave and up into the impressive limestone gorge of Trow Gill.
Breaking onto the open fellside, there is an opportunity to visit the entrance to Gaping Gill - the largest underground chasm in Britain (although it has to be said you can't see that much from the surface!).
From here, it is straight up the side of Ingleborough itself - a climb that we will take at a steady pace, giving plenty of time to admire the views.
Good conditions provide superb views from the summit - there is even a shelter to keep out of the wind!
Our route down follows the track across Simon Fell Breast to Sulber Nick.
Turning towards Sulber Gate we follow the track back down Long Lane into Clapham.
A superb round trip.

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 10½ miles
Ascent: 1600 ft
Leaders:
Dave Purdy

This walk consists of a higher level horseshoe circuit of Crummackdale than the “B” walk over the limestone pavement access land of Robin Proctor’s Scar, Thwaite Scars, Moughton Scars & Studrigg Scar.
In some places paths are indistinct and some “clint and gryke “ hopping is required but otherwise paths are very good.
Leaving Clapham by the tunnels, Thwaite Lane is used to reach an easy gulley leading to the access land above Robin Proctor’s Scar.
Continuing north we reach Long Scar and follow the “B” walk route to Sulber Gate and Thieves Moss.
At Beggar’s Stile we stay on the limestone rim of Moughton Scars to Capple Bank and then turn south towards Studrigg Scar where a steep descent brings us into Wharfe.
The return to Clapham from here is on enclosed tracks and field paths.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 900 ft
Leaders:
Ray Webb
Janet Purdy

Starting from Clapham we walk through the tunnels and then climb steadily along Long Lane track to the cairn on Long Scar.
The views here are superb with Pen-y-Ghent ahead and Ingleborough behind us and limestone pavement stretching out in all directions.
We then walk to Sulber Gate and through the strange landscape of Thieves Moss, gradually descending through Crummackdale to the hamlet of Wharfe.
We then follow tracks to the pretty village of Austwick and cross fields back to Clapham.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6 miles .
Ascent: 450 ft
Leaders:
Jean Makeating

A fairly easy, relaxed ‘C’ walk.  We  leave Clapham and for the first half mile, head quite steeply uphill through 2 tunnels passing Ingleborough Hall.
This section will be taken very slowly!
Once at the top we have completed most of our climbing for the day.
We then follow a level track before heading downhill to a minor road which we follow for a short distance before turning onto footpaths and tracks which lead us to a stone bridge/ford and on to Austwick village.
We may wish to stop off at the ‘Game Cock’ pub for an after lunch coffee (etc!).
We then take a pleasant route across fields and footpaths, though with several stone stiles, and make our way back to Clapham for well earned refreshments, which are plentiful.
