Reston Scar and the Kentmere valley.
Starting from Staveley we head North from the village up onto Reston Scar (255m) and Hugill Fell (256m).
Everyone will have passed these minor highpoints overlooking Staveley at the side of the A591, but I doubt (like the leaders) have ever visited, the views are quite impressive, and are two of Wainwright’s ‘Outlying Fells’.
The walk continues by dropping into the Kentmere valley and following the river Kent via Browfoot and Kentmere tarn to Kentmere, with its ancient hall and church.
Return is via the bridleway over Green quarter passing Skeggles water, Staveley fell and Elfhowe back to Staveley. |

| This circular walk starts by heading north out of Staveley to Barley Bridge, followed by a short steep climb through fields to Littlewood farm.
The route then goes eastwards on good paths to reach the valley of Longsleddale at Garnett Bridge visiting Potter Tarn and Gurnal Dubs on the way there.
We then turn northwest, walking along the valley bottom, until we reach the ruins of Tenter Howe farm. At this point the route climbs westwards out of the valley on a grassy zig-zag path onto open moorland but the path remains good and easy to follow.
After about 1.5 miles and just before we start descending to Brunt Knott farm, there is the chance to “bag” one of Wainwright’s outlying fells, namely Brunt Knott.
The extra ascent is only 200 ft and ¼ mile each way.
A group decision can be made on the day.
From Brunt Knott farm it really is downhill all the way back to Staveley on quiet lanes and bridle ways via Low Elfhowe and Scrogg’s Farm. |

| The “B” and “C” parties start the walk together. This is a pleasant and varied walk via quiet roads and tracks with a little open moorland and very few stiles.
Leaving Staveley we head towards Kentmere passing through Scroggs Farm and after crossing the River Kent we continue along the Kentmere valley to Browfoot where we recross the river and after a short climb through woodland which will be taken at a slow pace we emerge on open moorland with views of the surrounding mountains.
For the “C” party the return is all downhill from here - joining the road at Park House and proceed back to Staveley.
The ‘B’ party then climbs up to Ghyll Bank and follows paths to Frost Hole and Hagg Foot looking for waterfalls along our way before taking a quiet lane back into Staveley. |
