Sunday 17th July 2011 - Beddgelert

On Sunday, 17 July, our walks are based at Beddgelert in Snowdonia.

The coach will leave as usual from school at 8am prompt and travel direct to Bettws-y-Coed where there will be a short toilet stop (30p charge). ‘C’ walkers should put on boots and bring rucsacs on to the coach during this stop ready for an early drop off. They will leave the coach at Nant Gwynant where there is only one (not wonderful !) toilet. The coach will then go on to Beddgelert where all walks will end.

We plan to leave Beddgelert at 5.30pm arriving back in Formby at approx 8.30pm traffic permitting.

‘A’ Walk

It has not been possible to organise a separate A walk this month.
A walkers will find the B+ an acceptable alternative and  given favourable circumstances on the day Lynn Smith and John Hughes will lead a “there and back” from the B+. Walking the north ridge over Moel yr Ogif and Moel Lefn. An additional 2 miles and 500ft of ascent.

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 6 miles
Ascent: 2500 ft

Moel Hebog completely dominates the charming village of Beddgelert, and its summit is our objective today Leaving the village we have a short road walk to Cwm Cloch farm. From here good paths lead to the north east ridge.
On the recce we were entertained by the sight and sound of steam trains on the recently opened Welsh Highland Railway.
A rough path follows the ridge with some short sections of scrambling which will be taken slowly, with a couple of stops to enjoy the stunning views of Snowdon and its surrounding peaks.
The path levels off near the top and then winds through some rocks to the summit.
There is now a marvelous panorama of mountains,  to the west the Lleyn Peninsula and to the south Portmadog backed by Cardigan Bay.
After an easy descent on grass paths we enter Beddgelert Forest , where we follow the pretty, tumbling waters of Afon Meillonen and forest tracks back to Cwm Cloch and Beddgelert.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 6 miles
Ascent: 1000 ft

Although seemingly a short and easy 'B' walk, the route is often rocky, which makes it slightly more challenging.  Nevertheless, we should be back in Beddgelert by 4.00, so plenty of time for refreshments.
The triangular route follows rivers and over the foothills southeast of Beddgelert to reach Llyn Dinas.
Starting at Beddgelert, we follow the River Glaslyn through the beautiful Aberglaslyn gorge (described as one of the 'top 20' walks in Wales) to Nantmor.
Here we turn northwards and climb steadily up through Cwm Bychan, past the copper mine which operated in the 1920's to reach the highest point on the walk at 950'.
Given clear weather, a magnificent view stretches out northwards over Llyn Dinas and the Snowdonia Range making the one hour plus climb very worthwhile.
A steep descent on a well defined path takes us to the lakeside. The return to Beddgelert is along the river and past the Sygun Copper Mine.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6.5 miles.
Ascent: 650 ft

This is a linear walk which commences at Plas Gwynant car park, from whence we ascend via path and quiet road to Bryn Bedd, with pleasing views all around.
We achieve a significant part of the day’s climb as we do so.
From here we wend our way across fields to rejoin the lane and to follow beside a lively stream until we branch off along a pretty, undulating path through wood and meadow, with more fine views on our descent to the village of Nantmor.
Thence to Pont Aberglaslyn, where we indulge in a little rock scrambling( taken at a gentle pace) through a spectacular gorge to reach a very scenic path alongside the crystal clear, bubbling Afon Glaslyn  complete with falls, and on though fields leading to the charming village of Beddgelert.
