Sunday 20th September 2009 - Caldbeck, North Lakes

On Sunday, 20 September our walks are based on the village of Caldbeck in the North Lakes.

The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.   There will be a brief toilet stop at the Westmorland Services just past Junction 38 on the M6.

Caldbeck is a large village and is well equipped with a tea shop, pub, and large village green as well as a clogmaker!
All walks will end in the village and we aim to leave by 5.30pm and should be back in Formby between 7.30 and 8.00pm

‘A’ Walk Distance: 11 miles Ascent: 2500 ft Leaders: John Roberts Edwina Roberts	From Caldbeck we make our way to Fellside and then follow the Dale Beck to ascend Knott via the splendid falls of Roughton Gill (some scrambling involved!).  Heading east to Coomb Height, we pick up the Cumbrian Way to return via High Pike.
‘B+’ Walk Distance: 10 miles Ascent: 1600 ft Leaders: Andy Fowler Jane Fowler	Heading due south, we leave Caldbeck along the Cumbrian Way towards Nether Row and then start our gentle ascent to High Pike. Great views over the Lakes, north west coast and the Solway Firth will be presented  (weather permitting).   We start the descent again southwards before turning north east through the old mine workings and quarries and later fields to reach Wood Hall. Here we turn north west heading to Hull Scales before turning north along field paths back into Caldbeck.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 8 miles Ascent: 1000 ft Leaders: David Wake Barry Whitby	We set off on the Cumbria Way following Cald Beck to St. Kentigern’s well, a pack horse bridge and through Parson’s Park (muddy on recce) before turning south across the fields to the pretty village of Hesket Newmarket.  Continuing southwards through wild flower meadows we pass Wood Hall and climb up to Netherrow Brow moorland.  Turning west we follow the lower edge of the moor past Hudscales bunk house, Potts Gill and on to Little Fellside where we turn north.  Field paths and tracks take us past the ruined Moor House to the road west of Caldbeck.  Leaving the road we cross a field to the Fairy Bridge over Whelpo Beck and the limestone gorge.  Our route takes us past the ruins of Howk bobbin mill and back into Caldbeck.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 6½ miles. Ascent: 600 ft Leaders: David Turton Stuart Norris	This circular walk starts from Caldbeck village and, weather permitting, should give us views of the Cumbrian Fells, the Howgills and the Solway Firth at different points on the way.  From Caldbeck we climb steadily to Warnell Fell and then we make our way down to the Cald Beck at Brow Top.  Here we join the Cumbria Way which takes us back to Caldbeck village via a second ascent. .  There are several opportunities along the way for refreshment and comfort stops and for Craig ‘View Stops’.
