Sunday 24th January 2010 - Allgreave, Peak District

On Sunday, 24 January 2010, our walks are based at Allgreave in the Peak District.

The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.
We will go directly to Allgreave, where all walks begin and end.
Toilet facilities will be available on arrival in the Rose & Crown Inn where the coach will be parked.
Refreshments ( tea, coffee and alcoholic drinks etc) will be available at the Inn on completion of the walks.    
We aim to leave by 5.00pm, at the latest, and should be back in Formby between 7.00 and 7.30pm, traffic permitting.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 12 miles
Ascent: 1500 ft

From the Rose & Crown at Allgreave we walk along the Dane Valley to Hog Clough and then cross the river at Danebridge.
We climb up to the Hanging Stone and walk along the ridge to the Roaches, enjoying the many different rock formations and lovely views.
We circle back along the Staffordshire Moorlands Walk before dropping down to Gradbach Wood to find Lud’s Church.
The river Dane is crossed at the mill which is now a YHA.
An invigorating climb leads to the road back to the Rose & Crown.

 

 

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 1200 ft

We circle Hammerton Knowl to the north then continue south through Bennets Hill and Wincle Grange farms to Danesbridge. 
A steady ascent takes us to Roaches End where, weather permitting,views of the surrounding fells and valleys will be available. 
We descend through the lovely cavern at Lud’s Church and on to Gradbach where we cross the river Dane at the Mill YHA. 
A short road stretch takes us back to the Rose & Crown for refreshments.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8.5 miles
Ascent: 1500 ft

The walk starts at the pub and follows minor roads eastwards to descend to Gradbach Mill and then westwards along the river Dane. 
The path climbs out of the valley through woodland with a diversion to visit Lud’s Church and on to the Hanging Stone before descending to the track leading through more woodland and the descent to Danebridge.
The walk next follows a riverside path through the fisheries leading to a short climb up to the road to Whitelee and then across fields and round to Wincle Grange and Wincle before crossing Hog Clough. 
The route contours eastwards along the north side of the Dane Valley to Allmeadows and then follows the road back to the pub.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6.5 miles.

This circular walk starts at Allgreave where we walk along the main road for a short distance before taking a quiet lane due south to Allmeadows. 
From here we follow footpaths to Wincle with views across the Dane Valley. 
At Wincle we keep to the Dane Valley Way with spectacular views of the gorge of the Dane until we cross the river near Gradbach.
There is a short steep climb to a lane at Burncliff which will be taken slowly. 
We follow this quiet lane with good views back to Allgreave.
