Sunday 25th January 2009 - Ingleton

On Sunday 25 January our walks are based on Ingleton.  The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.  The first coach stop will be at Clapham  (toilets available) for the A walkers to depart – they should have boots and rucsacs ready on the coach.   The coach then goes on to Ingleton at which there are again toilets.  B+ and C walkers will begin their walk from there BUT  B walkers should avail themselves of the facilities here then re-board the coach  to go to Chapel le Dale for the start of their walk. Please let David or Linda know if you are doing the B walk so the coach doesn’t leave without you!

PLEASE NOTE THAT, DUE TO THE TIME OF YEAR, ALL WALKS MAY BE SUBJECT TO SUBSTANTIAL REVIEW ON THE DAY.    For walks down the Waterfalls there is a slight risk of an exit charge but this is unlikely!

We plan to leave Ingleton after the walks at 5.00pm to be back in Formby at about 7.30pm.     Conditions underfoot mean walking boots will be essential.

 

 

 

 

‘A’ Walk Distance: 8 miles Ascent: 2000 ft Leaders: Ian Currie Gordon Spencer	A grand day out. From Clapham we have a choice of routes to access Ingleborough Common. The best option from the toilets is to take Thwaite Lane opposite the church and then turn north on Long Lane, from where we can cut across to Trow Gill, a dramatic dry limestone valley.  We soon emerge at Gapin Gill, with the 100m plunge of Fell Beck (regrettably all hidden below ground).  Continuing in a northerly direction we soon reach Little Ingleborough before a final steep haul to the summit (2372ft, 723m).  The initial descent is steep but soon eases for a pleasant walk down to Ingleton.
‘B+’ Walk Distance: 11 miles Ascent:1400 ft Leaders: Trevor Ludlow John Hughes	Starting from Ingleton, the route slowly gains height on the path up the shoulder of Ingleborough.  At about halfway we branch north to contour along the valley under the steepest part of the hill. Further along the lovely limestone landscape, the walk crosses the valley at the tiny village of Chapel-le-Dale for the return leg on the other side of Twistleton Scars, eventually descending past some of the waterfalls for which Ingleton is so well known!
‘B’ Walk Distance: 7 miles Ascent: 300 ft Leaders: Linda Trollope David Willis	The route we chose on the day is very much subject to weather conditions and the coach driver’s discretion!  All things being well, we will commence our adventure at Chapel-le-Dale.   If it is fine, we will climb gradually up past Jingle Pot to Ellerdale Beck, thence via the grassy fairly level Kirby Gate path, viewing limestone pavement and fluted edge potholes en route.  Descent takes us to Twistleton Road and on to Ravenray Bridge.  From here we follow the footpath past stunning waterfalls, back to Ingleton.   In less clement weather, we will either start from Chapel-le-Dale and follow an old Roman road to Beezley and via another splendid set of Falls to base or follow a route, similar to the C group around the whole set of falls.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 7 miles Ascent: 500 ft Leaders: Craig Baker Stuart Norris	Starting from the centre of Ingleton, we head north to start the most picturesque part of the walk.  We slowly climb through part of the Ingleton Waterfall Park passing by the Snow Falls, Baxenghyll Gorge, River Falls, Beezley Falls and Triple Spout.  From here we skirt the bottom of Twistleton Scar End past Scar End Farm. This is where we leave the Ingleton Falls Park, initially heading west then south back towards Ingleton via a minor road.  We then head across fields towards Masongill Hall and from here we head back in to Ingleton via the road through Thornton in Lonsdale.
