Sunday 23rd September 2007 - Malham

Well here we are at the start of a new season of walking. We extend a welcome to our new members and hope you have all had a good summer. On Sunday 23 September we will walk in the Malham area of the Yorkshire Dales. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. There are toilets at the start of the walks therefore there will be no toilet stop en route. The ‘C' Walk starts at Gargrave before we reach Malham, please be booted up and have your rucksacks with you on the coach ready for a quick disembark. All walks finish in Malham where there are the usual facilities. We plan to leave at 5.30 pm to be back in Formby at about 7.45/8.00pm. Conditions underfoot mean walking boots will be essential.

‘A’ Walk
Distance: 15 miles
Ascent: 2500'
Leaders:
Ken Bryning
Bob Scurr

This walk takes in one of the best stretches of the Pennine Way from Malham over the limestone and gritstone to the summit of Fountains Fell (668m), with wonderful views over to neighbouring Penyghent and Great Whernside.
Leaving the village in a northerly direction, the road is taken to Langscar gate, before heading across Dean Moor Hill to the Water Sinks, and then follows the Pennine Way around Malham Tarn and through the Field Centre.
The climb continues past Tennant Gill farm and leads upon to Fountains Fell to reveal the two stone men by the summit wall.
The return (plus a visit to the true summit cairn!) is by following the ridge wall south, descending via Capon Hall, Black Hill, and Ewe Moor to Malham village.

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 10 ½ miles
Ascent: 1600 ft
Leaders:
Dave Purdy
Glennis Poole

Starting from the car park in Malham, we walk north west on good paths via Frank Barn, Burns Barn and Butterlands Barn, climbing gradually beneath Pikedaw Hill, to reach, after only 2 miles, the highest point of the walk near Nappa Cross where there are good views of Malham Tarn.
Descending on good grassy paths, we now make our way to the Tarn, where, time and weather permitting we will have lunch before joining Mastiles Lane at Street Gate.
The route follows Mastiles Lane for two easy miles and then turns south on yet another good track to Middle Laithe.
From there, a quiet minor road is used to reach Janet's Foss waterfall and the woodland path which leads back to Malham.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8½ miles
Ascent: 1200 ft
Leaders:
Barry Whitby
Peter Houghton

On leaving the coach at Malham we head south along the Pennine Way to Hanlith.
From here we climb steadily along Windy Pike Lane and then across Hanlith Moor to reach Weets Top and panoramic views all around.
From here we descend first to Hawthorns Lane and then Gordale Bridge.
Two short detours will allow us to view the impressive Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss waterfalls before we continue across to the limestone pavements above Malham Cove.
Using the stepped path we descend into Cove and then follow the beck back to Malham and the coach.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6½ miles.
Ascent: 600 ft
Leaders:

This walk starts from Gargrave village where toilets are available and to avoid coach-parking problems, “C” walkers should travel from Formby ready with boots on and rucksacks inside the coach.
There may be time for a coffee at one of the two cafes in Gargrave before starting the walk by crossing the Leeds-Liverpool canal to join the Pennine Way, with a gradual climb over fields to Harrow Hill.
We then follow the River Aire to Airton village where we leave the path to walk through the village where we can visit an interesting Farm Shop and café.
Returning to the Pennine Way over a footbridge we continue along the riverbank to Hanlith Hall.
Approaching Malham we will have walked 6½ miles. At this point there is an opportunity to walk to Janet's Foss although this is optional.
There is a one-mile level path to the waterfall with either a return back along the same path or a moderate climb with excellent views before dropping down into Malham village.
