Sunday 14th October 2007 - Grasmere

On Sunday 14 October we will walk in the Grasmere area of the Lake District. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. There are toilets at the start of the walks therefore there will be no toilet stop en route. The ‘B+’ party leave the coach at Rydal so please be booted up and have your rucksacks with you for a quick embarkation. The ‘A’ party get back on the coach in Grasmere to go out to their start beyond Grasmere. All walks finish in Grasmere where there are the usual facilities. We plan to leave at 5.30 pm to be back in Formby at about 7.45/8.00pm. Conditions underfoot mean walking boots will be essential.

This months ‘B’ walk follows our recent theme of Julia Bradbury’s Wainwright Lakeland Classics for B walkers, this month taking in the ‘lion’ and the ‘lamb’ formations on Helm Crag.
It will be taken at a steady pace suitable for all.
Starting at the main coach park in Grasmere, we walk through the town and leave on the Easedale road before beginning the gentle ascent up Far Easedale.
On reaching the col at Broadstone Head our route turns north and then east to ascend Calf Crag before following the ridge to Pike of Carrs, Gibson Knott and finally on to Helm Crag.
A steep descent then follows to bring us back to Lancrigg where we will walk through the arboretum back to Grasmere.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7 miles.
Ascent: 400 ft
Leaders:
Steve Wright

David Turton

This circular walk is based on Grasmere and includes sections with views down on both Grasmere and Rydal Water as well as lake side stretches.
Starting in Grasmere village we walk northwards through fields before starting a gentle ascent to the high level path to Rydal.
From here we walk alongside Rydal Water and Grasmere before re-entering Grasmere village by a quiet lane.
