Sunday 18th May 2008 - Hawes

On Sunday 18 May our walks are based on Hawes in North Yorkshire. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt.   We plan to leave Hawes at 5pm after the walks and be back in Formby at about 7.00 to 7.30pm.     Conditions underfoot mean walking boots will be essential.

The cost of travel will be £8.50 for adults, £10 for guests and £4.00 for leaders and for children and students in full time education who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please return the slip, completed in full, with a cheque (NOT CASH), in an envelope marked “Range Walking Club”, to the school office by Thursday 8th May . If you wish to deliver your return forms personally, out of school hours, please deliver them by the same date to the Treasurer or Chairman.

Turning south east we walk across the fell to the cattle grid at the top of Buttertubs Pass.

We then go across the fields into Hawes.

We leave Hawes on the Pennine Way to Gayle to catch a path for our main climb of the day to Wether Fell and the Roman Road.
Descending over the fells down into the little hamlet of Marsett we then head east on tracks and fields along the valley floor to Semer Water (the largest lake in Yorkshire) and Countersett.
A short but steep climb northwards takes us back to the Roman Road on which we remain for about half a mile before descending over Burtersett High Pasture into the village of Burtersett.
We then head east along fields back into Hawes for well deserved refreshments.

From the coach park in Hawes, we head eastwards to gain the field path that takes us to Bursett village and the bridle path that climbs steadily up the fellside with panoramic views to Wensleydale and the fells beyond.
We then plan to contour round Wether Fell before joining the Cam High Road which we follow in a south-westerly direction to join the minor road at the head of Sleddale.
Heading back towards Hawes, we divert to walk alongside the Gayle Beck and view the spectacular Aysgil Force.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 5.2 miles.
Ascent: 1000 ft
Leaders:

Steve Wright

From Hawes we follow the road a short distance before we take a paved footpath across the fields to Bursett.
From here we start the climb of the day which will be taken at a very gentle pace.
On the way up we pass a shake hole.
When we reach the Cam High Road (Roman Road) we will spend a moment or two to get our breath back and admire the views of Wensleydale.
We then follow the roman road for a short distance before we take the track signed Gayle.
We soon start our descent which includes several stiles and more shake holes.
Once in Gayle it is just a short walk to the Wensleydale Creamery  (anyone wanting to buy cheese will have to take their boots off before going in!) and then on to Hawes and it’s wide selection of tearooms and pubs.
