A lovely circuit that eschews the obvious ‘delights' of Kinder Scout.
Starting in Hayfield we follow Highgate Lane southwards and then climb steadily via tracks and paths to South Head (Dark Peak - 063846).
We then follow the ridge to Brown Knoll (569m) and on to Whitemoor Clough, which we descend steeply to Dalehead and thence to Upper Booth.
The return leg takes up (steeply but slowly!) through the beauty spot of Jacob's Ladder and thence by good tracks (mostly downwards!) via Edale Cross, Coldwell Clough and Bowden Bridge before returning to Hayfield. |

| Starting from Hayfield we climb gradually on a good path (the scene of the famous “Mass Trespass”)towards the shooting cabin on Whitebrow, where we can look down on Kinder Reservoir.
Having worked hard to gain some height we now have to lose it (!) as we drop into the foot of William Clough.
Here we start the 1-mile climb on a rough track beside a stream to join the Pennine Way as it wends its route south-eastwards round the edge of the Kinder Plateau, passing Kinder Downfall, Kinder Low and Edale Rocks.
Turning west, we visit the historic Edale Cross before descending Oaken Clough and Coldwell Clough on a good track.
Finally, the return into Hayfield is made through Elle Bank Woods and then using a path beside the River Kinder.
Pray for the right conditions to see Kinder Downfall going backwards.

| From Hayfield Visitor Centre we follow the River Kinder to Hill Houses where we leave the river to climb to the Pennine Bridleway along stony paths.
We skirt Mount Famine and the path passes behind South Head with extensive views in all directions and a feeling of isolation.
Leaving the Pennine Bridleway, we lose height as we walk over fields to Shire Oaks where we follow farm roads and fields to Breck Head.
A short distance on he road (with a detour to the pub at New Smithy if requested) takes us to a metalled farm road, which gains height, passing Bennet Barn.
Paths take us back past Vorposten to the Pennine Bridleway where we retrace our steps for a few yards before the last lap into Hayfield via Highgate Road.
A pleasant walk, mostly on hard paths, with two ascents, which will be taken steadily. |

From Hayfield we follow the wooded valley of the River Kinder upstream to reach Kinder Reservoir.
With fine views across to Kinder Downfall we continue to climb on the northern side of reservoir to Williams Clough.
Our route now takes us westwards via White Brow and then across the heather covered moors to Little Hayfield.
From here we walk the quiet lanes below Lantern Pike before heading back to Hayfield via the Sett Valley Trail, a disused railway line. |
