Sunday 21nd January 2007 - Burwardsley Cheshire

On Sunday 21 January our walks follow the Sandstone Trail around Higher Burwardsley in Cheshire (OS Grid Ref. SJ 521 564) . The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. There will be no toilet stop en route, as there are toilets at or close to the start of all walks. All walks finish at the Candle factory and Craft Centre in Higher Burwardsley where there is a teashop. We plan to leave at 4.30 pm to be back in Formby at about 6.00pm. Conditions underfoot mean walking boots will be essential.

 
 
 
‘A’ Walk
Distance: 13 miles
Ascent: 1,450 ft

Starting west of Tarporley we skirt Birch Heath before joining the Sandstone Trail to cross the Shropshire Union Canal.
The walk then passes a succession of castles as it meanders around Peckforton hills on the approach to Bulkley Hill (NT) with views both to the east and west of the Cheshire plain.
The southernmost part of the walk takes in the magnificent Iron Age Maiden Castle.
The stunning views are maintained on the return past Rawhead to the welcoming Pheasant Inn next door to the candle factory at Burwardsley.

 

 

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 10 ½ miles
Ascent: 500 ft

This walk simply follows the Sandstone Trail from Delamere Forest (toilets provided) to Higher Burwardsley Candle Factory through both deciduous and coniferous forests, fields and moor visiting en route the Shropshire Union Canal and a couple of castles (Beeston and Peckforton). 
If visibility is good, panoramic views are possible along the valley and towards the Welsh mountains.


‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8¾ miles
Ascent: 1,000 ft

This circular walk follows the Sandstone Trail from the Candle Factory in Higher Burwardsley over Bulkeley Hill to Raw Head, Tower Wood and over Bickerton Hill to the village of Brown Knowl from where we follow field paths, farm tracks and lanes back to Higher Burwardsley.

 

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 6¾ miles.
Ascent: 900ft

This circular walk on a prominent sandstone ridge starts from the Candle Factory in Burwardsley and takes in stretches of the Eddisbury Way and the Sandstone Trail.
The route includes fields (very muddy), forest tracks and some country lanes.
Depending on the weather there are views over the Cheshire Plain and also of the Liverpool skyline.
