Sunday 27th November 2005 - Orton, East Cumbria

On Sunday 27 November we have a change of plan . Our original plan to walk in the Berwin area of Wales was deemed too far to travel at this time of the year, so for a shorter journey we will take you to the East Cumbria area around the village of Orton . Those who have walked the Coast-to-Coast Walk will know this place as it is on that route. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. We will have a short stop at Old Tebay Services to use their toilets. All walks finish in Orton where there is a pub (which was undergoing refurbishment and may not be open!), tearooms, and the chocolate factory, which we are told, will be open on the day. We plan to leave Orton at 5.00 pm to be back in Formby at about 1900 hrs. Conditions underfoot mean walking boots will be essential.

‘A’ Walk Distance:13 miles Ascent: 1,400 ft Leaders: John Roberts Edwina Roberts	Starting from Orton we head north via Orton Scar to the monument on Beacon Hill and then continue to Gaythorne Hall. Striking east we reach Great Asby and enjoy the company of Three Greyhounds. The return encompasses perhaps the finest limestone pavement in the county with detours to places of interest.
‘B+’ Walk Distance: 9 ½ miles Ascent: 700ft Leaders: Andy Fowler Jane Fowler	We leave Orton across the village green in an easterly direction through fields to an ancient stone circle before starting our slight ascent to the limestone pavements.  Heading northeast to the settlement at Maisongill and rounding to join the Asby Way we continue south along the valley before clambering across the limestone pavement to the ancient fort remains, with great views on all sides (weather permitting).  We then descend off the scar heading back to the stone circle and retracing our steps into Orton.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 8 miles Ascent: 600ft Leaders: John McEvoy David Wake	We start our walk from the service station in the village of Old Tebay, passing through the village to walk alongside the River Lune for a short distance before turning west, passing under the M6 and then the West Coast railway line to Greenholme. Here we turn north through fields to Scout Green and on to Salterwath. We now turn east and pass back under the railway and then under the two separated carriageways of the M6. This part of the route is open moorland but before long we are back into stone walled fields and rough tracks heading for Orton.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 6½ miles. Ascent: 500ft Leaders: David Poole David Turton	This circular walk includes a section over the spectacular limestone pavement at Great Asby Scar. The traverse of the pavement will be taken slowly and walking sticks are advisable to aid balance. We leave Orton by a bridleway to the Orton Scar and then follow the road to Appleby before taking a track to the nature reserve at Great Asby Scar. After walking over the pavement area, we leave the nature reserve and descend to Scar Side. From here we make our way back to Orton by bridleways and footpaths.
