Sunday 12th February 2006 - Clitheroe

On Sunday 12 February our walks and Hot pot are in the Cartmel, South Lakes area. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. There will be a toilet stop at Burton Services on the M6 where the A and B+ parties need to put their boots on. The A party will leave the coach on the A590 with the B+ party getting off at Lindale. The meal is at the Royal Oak in the main square. We plan to leave Cartmel after the Hot Pot at about 6.30 pm to be back in Formby at about 8.30 pm. Conditions underfoot, plenty of mud, mean walking boots will be essential.

Please return Booking form by Thurday 2nd February.

This is a walk taking in three minor ridges in a linear walk over this very delightful area of South Lakeland.
Starting at Mill Side Village on the A590 (SD 451840) we ascend Whitbarrow via the wooded scar and head along this lovely limestone ridge to the Trig point at Lord's seat. (709ft).
After a quick coffee! A steep decent brings us to Witherslack Hall followed by a walk through woodland and fields under Yewbarrow to the village of Witherslack.
A little road walking is required through the Winster valley, followed by a climb over Newton Fell (587ft) to Dixon Ground.
We descend yet again to cross the A590 and head in the direction of Lindale, but turn off to the quiet village of Hampsfield and then the final ascent to The Hospice on the summit of Hampsfield Fell –known locally as Hamsfell (727ft).
The final descent takes us into Cartmel via the racing stables and to the well-earned Hot Pot!

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 9½ miles
Ascent: 1,500 ft

Starting from Lindale, we head west and begin the only major climb of the day to Hampsfield Farm.
Turning south, an easy stretch on grassy paths above Eggerslack Woods, followed by another, shorter climb, brings us to the high point of the walk-the “Hospice” on top of Hampsfield Fell - which provides extensive views in every direction and also from where, for those to whom such things matter, there is even [may be, (Ed)] a distant sighting of Ingleborough!
Turning north again, we descend to Hampsfield Hall and then use field and woodland footpaths to reach Beckside.
A short uphill walk on a minor road brings us to Over Ridge and from here bridleways; the Cumbrian Coastal Way and the Cistercian Way are followed back to Cartmel.
The views over Cartmel Sands on this final section of the walk are stunning.

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8½ miles
Ascent: 1,150ft

Leaving the coach we walk through Cartmel village passing the priory and up onto Hampsfield Fell.
On reaching the ridge we head across to Fell End and good views over Grange-over-Sands.
Shortly after descending we skirt Middle Fell and Allithwaite across to Birkby Hall.
It's onward to Low Bank Side where we can join the Cumbria Coastal Way.
A gradual climb then take us via Mount Barnard to Howbarrow Farm.
At this point remember to check out the panorama across to west before we make our way via field paths and quiet lanes back to Cartmel, which we enter by crossing the racecourse.

‘C’ Walk
Distance: 7½ miles.
Ascent: 600ft

Starting at Cartmel we cross the Racecourse and climb steadily through Barns Bank plantation to Hill where there are extensive views of the surrounding area.
We then pass the Farm Shop at Howbarrow and follow Cumbrian Coastal Way and the Cistercian Way to the village of Cark where there are two pubs and toilets.
Weather and time permitting we will walk down to the shore at Sand Gate with excellent views across the estuary and an opportunity for bird watching if you have your binoculars.
We retrace our steps to Cark and follow Cistercian Way to Cartmel where there should be ample time to visit the Priory or the Sticky Toffee Pudding shop!
