Sunday 19th June 2005 - Glennridding

On Sunday 19 June we venture to Glenridding in the Lake District. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt. There will be no toilet stop on the way as there are toilets near the start of each walk. The B+ and B are circular walks; the C Walk starts with a ferry ride to the start of the walk (there is a fare of £4.40 for this ferry) walking back to Glenridding. The A is a linear walk also finishing in Glenridding. We expect to leave Glenridding at 5.15 pm to be back in Formby by 7.45 pm.

Please return the slip, completed in full, with a cheque ( NOT CASH ), in an envelope marked “Range Walking Club”, to the school office by Thursday 9 June.

 
 
 
‘A’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 3,300 ft

We ascend St Sunday Crag from Glenridding via Thornhow End and Birks.
We then descend into Deepdale Hause before climbing up to Fairfield via Cofa Pike.  
We thus have excellent views of Ullswater, Windermere and Coniston. From Fairfield we return by Grisedale Hause, Tarn and Beck.  
We go to Glenridding via the delightful Lanty's Tarn.

 

 

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 3,000 ft

The 3-Peak Challenge
Leaving Glenridding in a westerly direction, we head to Rake Cottages and onwards to the Youth Hostel, before climbing steeply through old mine workings to Lucy's Tongue. 
We continue climbing to White Stones for magnificent views back to Ullswater. 
After a slight descent, we continue a steady climb to our first peak of Stybarrow Dodd for panoramic views over the western hills and Thirlmere.
Descending to Sticks Pass , we start climbing again to our second peak of Raise and the highest point of the walk ( England 's eleventh highest peak). 
We descend from Raise for our final short climb to peak three, Whiteside Bank with great views of Helvellyn. 
From here it's down hill all the way via Glenridding Common back to base.
 

‘B’ Walk

We follow the B+ party out of Glenridding Greenside Road to just past the Youth Hostel, where we cross the beck and head back down the valley to Lanty Tarn.
From here we turn westwards up Grisedale as far as Nethermostcove Beck, where we cross Grisedale Beck and then follow the valley back down to Patterdale.
Paths beside the main road take us back to the car park and our coach.

‘C’ Walk
Distance:7 miles.
Ascent: 500 ft

Starting from Glenridding pier we take the steamer to Howtown pier where the walk begins.
The path follows the shore line of Ullswater and is undulating with rocky sections that will be taken slowly.
Eventually we reach Patterdale and then return along the main road to Glenridding.

Please note: The Steam fare of £4.40 will be collected on the coach.
