Sunday 27th February 2005 - Staveley

On Sunday 27 February we have our Hot Pot walk at The Eagle and Child in Staveley with the walks in the Lyth Valley area of the South Lake District.

There is a limit of 60 places for this event so book early to avoid disappointment!

The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am promptly. There will be a toilet stop on the way at Burton Services on the M6. The A and B+ walks will leave the coach before we reach Staveley. The ‘B' and ‘C' walks will start in Staveley. There are also toilets here. The Hot Pot will be at approximately 5.30 pm and w e plan to leave Staveley at 7.00 pm to be back in Formby at about 9.00 pm.­ Conditions underfoot mean walking boots are essential.

Please return the slip, completed in full, with a cheque ( NOT CASH ), in an envelope marked “Range Walking Club”, to the school office by Thursday 10 February. This is a week earlier than usual because of school half term holiday.

 

 

 

‘A’ Walk Distance: 13 miles 1,300 ft Leaders: John Roberts Margaret Pegg	Yew wood love to go on this walk from Witherslack with its 17century church and mature Yew trees. We climb Yewbarrow go past Witherslack Hall and up onto Lords Seat on the summit of Whitbarrow. There are magnificent views, (if the day is clear), from both scars, of Morecambe Bay , Cartmel and the Lyth Valley. Our route to Staveley then follows paths to Crosthwaite, Underbarrow and Capplewrigg.
‘B+’ Walk Distance: 10 miles Ascent: 1,100ft Leaders: Andy Fowler Jane Fowler	We start on the A590 at grid ref 502867 and head north into the grounds of Sizergh Castle and then west to Brigsteer Park.  Continuing northwards through the woods we stop for morning coffee at some small waterfalls.  We then climb to Helsingham church for picturesque views over the Lyth valley and once again head north across the moorland of Scout Scar to the viewpoint for lunch, where panoramic views abound in all directions. Continuing along the edge of Scar Wood and onto Ratherheath Lane we head along moorland to Knott Hill and Ashes Coppice before crossing fields into Staveley for a well-earned hot pot supper.
‘B’ Walk Distance: 8 ½ miles Ascent: 1,020 ft Leaders: David Pool David Wake	Starting from Staveley we set off south westerly under the railway and over the A591 through fields to climb gently up the lane to Fell Plain. From here we head south through rough fields with limestone outcrops, past Yew Tree Farm, over the Crook Road to the ruins of St Catherine's Church. More field paths take us past Crook Hall to lanes leading to Crag Hills. Field Paths and green (++muddy) lanes bring us to Capplerigg Lane, then over the Crook Road once more and across fields to Knott Hill (not a hill, more of a mound!). Continuing now northwards through Ashes Coppice (not a forest - ask me on the day!) we follow the B+ route into Staveley for a well-earned hot pot supper.
‘C’ Walk Distance: 7 miles. Ascent: 500 ft Leaders: David Turton A N Other	This circular walk based on Staveley, takes in a variety of terrain and if the weather permits, some good views of the eastern fells. After crossing the River Kent by Barley Bridge , we ascend to the Littlewood Farm and the climb gently to Potter Tarn. The public footpath to the next tarn, Gurnal Dubs, crosses a stream about 3” deep, so waterproof boots will be desirable. From here we walk to Birk Rigg before descending to Potter Fell Road and then make our way back to Staveley by quiet lanes, bridleways and footpaths.
