Sunday 25th April 2004 - Holmfirth

This month's walks are in the Last of the Summer Wine Country at Holmfirth. The coach will leave school as usual at 8.00 am prompt and there will be a toilet stop en route at Birch Services on the M62. All walks finish in Holmfirth where there is the usual end of walk facilities. Toilets are in the town centre NOT where the coach is parked. We plan to leave at 5.30pm to be back in Formby at about 7.15pm. Conditions are expected to be muddy and walking boots will be essential.

Booking forms need to be returned by MONDAY 19 April . This is later than usual because of the Easter Holiday.
 
 
 
‘A’ Walk
Distance: 12 miles

The walk starts high up on the A635 where the Oldham Way crosses the road (GR 051063). We traverse Dean Head Moss to Black Hill (1909 ft).
Turning to the north east we follow a short section of the Pennine Way before heading along Issues Road to Holme.
Here we turn onto north onto the Holme Valley Circular Walk to reach Digley reservoir.
Continuing on the Holme Valley C W we then stretch our legs to Upperthong and on to Netherthong before dropping down into Holmfirth.

 

‘B+’ Walk
Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 1,250 ft

We start our walk from the coach park about half a mile outside of Holmfirth and make our way up a hill to Hill.
A green lane then allows us to reach Upperthong and the Holme Valley Circular Walk that takes us towards to Holmbridge.
From Holmbridge we climb up to Crow Hill to regain the Holme Valley C W to gently ascend to Elysium.
From here we take the Kirklees Way to Morrow Wood and Scholes village leading us northwards along a series of paths and tracks before dropping down into Holmfirth.

 

‘B’ Walk
Distance: 8.9 miles
Ascent: 850 ft

This is a beautifully varied walk that exhibits the best of the West Yorkshire Moors and Dales, made famous by Compo and his friends.
Starting on the A635 to the East of Holmfirth (GR 097077), we descend to the Digley reservoirs and thence southward to the village of Holme.
Our route then follows the Kirklees Way and the Holme Valley Walk via Crow Hill to Elysium and Hollin Hill reservoir.
A short road walk brings us to the picturesque Morrow Wood and to Scholes Village whence we cross between Dover and Paris before descending steeply to Holmfirth.

‘C’ Walk
Distance:7½ miles.
Ascent: 650 ft

This is a circular walk with several steep ascents at first which will be taken gently.
From the coach park outside Holmfirth we make our way up to the hamlets of Netherhong and Upperthong via footpaths and quiet lanes.
Further footpaths take us along a ridge with good views to Hogley Green and Hasterley.
The remainder of the walk is a gentle descent to Holmbridge and a riverside walk back to Holmfirth.
