Range Walking Club
Sunday 23rd September 2001-North Wales-Conwy
Things are now hopefully getting back to normal and we can look forward to a full season of walks. Some areas are still not available and we may have to modify our programme as the season progresses.

This month's walks on Sunday 23 September take us to North Wales to explore the beautiful coastal areas around Conwy. All footpaths are officially open but some closed notices have not yet been taken down. In the event of a dispute arising, please leave all negotiations to your leader. There will be no toilet stop en route, such are provided at the start of each walk. (Please note that there is charge for the toilets in Conwy). Boots are recommended for all walks as the paths have not been walked as frequently as usual and could be loose and stony. The arrangements return to normal with the coach leaving school at 8.00am promptly and will leave Conwy for the return journey at 17.00 hours, hoping to be back in Formby by 19.00 hours.

The cost of travel will be £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and students in full time education who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please return the slip, completed in full, with a cheque (NOT CASH), in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club", to the school office by Thursday 13 September.

'A' Walk- "Castles, Forts and Standing Stones"
Starting at the castle, we take the "North Wales Path" along the quay then turn inland to ascend Conwy Mountain and the Iron Age Fort of Castell Caer, then drop down to the Sychnant Pass. We continue to Maen Esgob's ancient settlement then head inland and ascend Tal-y-Fan for a late lunch. Descending Cae Cach we turn north-east through fringe pasture lands of the Conwy valley to return to Conwy.

Distance: 14 miles
Ascent: 2500'
Leaders: Merrion Williams & Gordon Spence

'B'+ Walk- "Coastal Extravaganza"
A walk for those who enjoy coastal views and the chance to see some wild life (binoculars useful). A walk on good tracks and paths with relatively little height. Starting in Llandudno, we follow the "North Wales Path" around the bay and past the pier (time to walk to the end and back if you wish). Taking the toll road we ascend the Great Orme (650ft), passing St Tudwal's Well we then take the path around the Country Park and Park Farm, rejoining the path at Gogarth we follow the coast until we reach the bridge across the River Conwy, leaving a short distance to refreshments at journey's end.

Distance: 11 miles
Ascent: 700'
Leaders: Rick Tynan, A.N.Other

'B' Walk- "From Lianfairfechan to Conwy Castle"
If you enjoyed last summer's walk along the North Wales Path ending at the small seaside resort of Llanfairfechan, you will almost certainly appreciate this walk which explores more of the North Wales Path. Starting where we finished last time, we have a steady climb for an hour on a quiet country road to reach the North Wales Path but after that it is pretty level until the final hour's gentle descent to Conwy for the facilities and the coach. An excellent walk with delightful views of the coast on one side and the hills on the other.

Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 1300'
Leaders: Ed McCluskey & David Willis

'C' Walk- "Quayside to Countryside"
A varied circular walk with riverside, North Wales Path, lanes, fields, and some road walking. Parts of the walk may be muddy, especially after rain. From the coach park at Conwy, we make our way to the quayside where we walk along the river, eventually turning back towards the town to cross the railway via a bridge. We then head west along the lower slopes of Conwy Mountain to the base of Alitwen. Heading south east to Llechwedd, we then travel east on lane and road before turning northwards across fields to reach the coach park. There are a number of stiles (some slippery), towards the end of the walk.

Distance: 6¾ miles
Ascent: 800'
Leaders: Stuart Norris & David Griffiths
