Range Walking Club
Sunday 24th February 2002-Saddleworth Moor Area

This month's walks on Sunday 24 February will be in the Saddleworth Moor area and will end with the Hot pot supper in The Royal George in Greenfield. There will be a toilet stop on the way there on the M62 Motorway . The ground is very wet and muddy at this time of the year and boots and possibly gaiters are essential for all walks. We recommend that you have a change of clothing and footwear available at the end of the walks so that you feel comfortable in the Royal George. The coach will leave school at 8.00 am prompt and will leave The Royal George for the return journey at about 18.30 hours, hoping to be back in Formby by 20.00 hours.

The cost of travel will be £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and students in full time education who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please return the slip, completed in full, with a cheque (NOT CASH), in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club", to the school office by Thursday 14 February. If you wish to personally deliver your return forms out of hours please deliver them to the Treasurer or David Wake.

'A' Walk
Starting from the A672 above Denshaw (SD 978123) we head east past Readycon Dean Reservoir and take the packhorse route across Marsden Moor Estate (NT) to the Standedge Tunnel End and its industrial artefacts. We then climb above the tunnel and follow the Standedge Trail to the Diggle end and follow the Huddersfield Narrow Canal through Uppermill to the Hot Pot in Greenfield.

Distance: 13 miles
Ascent: 750'
Leaders: Margaret Pegg & John Roberts

'B'+ Walk
Starting from Uppermill, we follow the canal towpath to Diggle. From Diggle we follow the Oldham way via minor roads and fields before climbing up onto the edge of Saddleworth moor to Slade rocks. From here we contour round the edge of the moor before passing an Obelisk and dropping down Sugar Load hill to join a walled track which we follow to the Holmfirth road. We cross the road and make our way down to the Dovestone reservoir dam, which we cross. We then walk along the eastern edge of the reservoir until we join an old tram road heading up towards Chew reservoir. Part wayup, we cross Chew brook and head west through woods and over fields before dropping down to the road and a short walk to the Royal George where the coach and Hot Pot supper await our arrival.

Distance: 11 miles
Ascent: 1100'
Leaders: Steve McIlrailth & Steve Wright

'B' Walk
This is 'D' day! The two Daves take you to Dobcross, Delf, Dean Head and Diggle and despite diversions, deposit you for dinner and drinks with due care and diligence. Departing Uppermill, we climb Colt Hill lane and cross the golf course before descending to Dobcross, whence we follow the upper Tame valley to Delph. The route then takes us northwards via Delph Greave and Grange to the lower Castleshaw reservoir before heading east to Dean Head. Turning southwards, a short descent brings us to the southern portals of the Standedge tunnel where we pick up the towpath of the recently restored Huddersfield narrow canal. This takes us back through Uppermill before joining the Trans Pennine bridle path for the final leg to the Royal George and our much deserved Hot Pot.

Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 800'
Leaders: Dave Wake & Dave Poole

'C' Walk
Starting from Uppermill we follow the canal to Weakey and then climb up to meet the Oldham Way. We follow the Oldham Way to Pobgreen and then walk along the side of the hill with good views of the Upper Tame Valley before dropping down to Shaws. From here we follow the bridlepath to our coaches at Greenfield.

Distance: 6½ miles
Ascent: 500'
Leaders: David Turton & John McKay
