Range Walking Club
Sunday 19th November 2000, Cumbria-Sedburgh.

On Sunday 19 November we go to the quiet market town of Sedburgh on the borders of Cumbria and Yorkshire. The coaches will leave school at 08.00 hours prompt. There are toilets at the car park in Sedburgh so there will be no need for a stop on route. Mindful of the time of year, the walks are planned to finish at 16.00 hours, leaving time for refreshments before we leave at 16.45 hours, which should see us back in Formby by 18.45 hours. Cost of travel remains £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and students in full time education and who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please complete the slip for the trip carefully and return it with your cheque (NOT CASH) to the school office by THURSDAY 9 NOVEMBER in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".

All walks start and finish in Sedburgh. Please note, boots are necessary on all walks.

'A' Walk
This "classic" Howgills circular ascends by Settlebank Gill to Avant Haw, Calders and The Calf (2220 ft). A short traverse north east will take us to the head of Cautley Holme Beck where we descend close to the impressive Cautley Spout fails. Turning south we return to Sedburgh along the Rawthey valley.

Distance: 11 miles
Ascent: 2200'
Leaders: Merion Williams and Gordon Spence

'B+' Walk
Knoutberry Haw (2218 ft) is the high point for the day on the circular walk giving good views of the Howgills and Ingleborough (apparently). We follow good tracks along the River Rawthey to Dowbiggin before striking out across open moorland for Baugh Fell. On the recce the ground was very wet and boggy and there will be a "prospective bog trotters weigh in" before we leave Formby, if it is still raining in November. After lunch by the Knoutberry Haw trig point, we will descend by Ringing Keld Gutter and Hallbank to well deserved refreshments in Sedburgh.

Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 1900'
Leaders: Rick Tynan and Dave Miles

'B' Walk
A circular walk from Sedburg across riparian and agricultural pasture land using the Dales Way. From Sedburgh we head south to the River Rawthey. Following the river past Birkes to Brig Flatts via a road, we then cross fields to Oaks and on to the River Lune towards Lincoln Inns Bridge. We continue up river to Low Branthwaite and Bramaskew toward Nether Bainbridge and Hole House with picturesque views of the valley ahead and behind us, we return via Howgills Lane with detours to Craggstone Wood and Under Winder.

Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 450'
Leaders: Dave Willis and Ed McCluskey

'C' Walk
A circular walk starting in Sedburgh comprising of field paths, riverside walking, parts of the Dates Way and some road walking. We head out of Sedburgh up Howgill Lane then drop down through several farms and onto Slacks Lane to reach the Dales Way. We follow the Dales Way to Hole House where we cross the River Lune. We then climb up to Goodies farm from where we road walk to Waterside, where we follow the river again and cross over at Lincoln's Inn Bridge. Heading down to the River Rawthey, we again pick up the Dales Way - this follows the river back into Sedburgh.
