Range Walking Club
Sunday June 25th 2000 - Lake District - Coniston

Our travels this month take us to the beautiful area of South Lakeland around Coniston Water; always a place where the pleasures of walking are enhanced by magical scenery. The trip takes place on Sunday, 25 June. There will be a TOILET STOP ONLY at Burton Services on the outward journey. All walks will end at Coniston Village where various refreshments are available. The coaches will leave school at 0800 hrs prompt and we hope to be back there by 2000 hrs. The cost of travel is £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and for students in full time education who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please return slips with cheques (NOT CASH) to the school office by Thursday, 12 June in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".
Boots are necessary on all walks.

'A' Walk
A chance to savour one of the all time Lakeland Classics, 'The Coniston Round'. Starting in Coniston Village we follow the track to the north of Church Beck before ascending above the Coppermine valley and then via Red Dell Beck to the summit of Wetherlam (2502'). This is the start of an undulating ridge walk taking in the bulk of the Coniston peaks, Swirl How (2630'), Brim Fell (2611'), Coniston Old Man (2633') and Dow Crag (2555'). The return is over Buck Pike (2441') and Brown Pike (2237') to the Walna Scar road and a descent into Coniston. Subject to the weather, a vast panorama of views is available. Paths are good in the most part and, whilst the walk involves a considerable amount of climbing, it is a walk not to be missed!

Distance:11½ miles
Ascent: 3875'
Leaders: Ken Bryning and Rob Scurr

'B'+ Walk
Starting at Torver we begin a pleasant walk via woodland and disused quarries to reach the Walna Scar road. From here we begin an ascent to Goat's Water and then to the summit of Coniston Old Man (2633'). Walking north across Brim Fell and along Swirl Band we reach the summit of Swirl How (2630') after another short climb. We then begin the very steep and rocky descent of Prison Band to reach Swirl Hawse. The walk back into Coniston is past Levers Water and Copper Mine valley. We should be amply rewarded for our efforts with constantly changing views of the Lake District fells and tarns.

Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 2800'
Leaders: David Purdy and Glennis Poole

'B' Walk
The walk starts at Blawith Village, south of Lake Coniston and climbs gently up to Beacon Tarn following the Cumbria Way towards Plain Rigg's Reservoir. We then make our way to Torver where there is a chance of refreshment at the Wilson Arms. From Torver the path climbs through woodland towards Torver High Common under the shadow of Coniston Old Man. We then join the Walna Scar road before dropping down to Coniston Village with views of the lake.

Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 1500'
Leaders: Janet Purdy and Ray Webb

'C' Walk
Leaving Coniston we climb gradually to each Miners' Bridge. Good views all around as we contour upwards to reach the Walna Scar road and on to Torver Beck. Having viewed the waterfall into the quarry, we follow the beck down to Little Arrow. Continuing through the woods we reach the western shoreline of Coniston Lake and the Cumbria Way, our route back to the coach in Coniston Village.

Distance: 7½ miles
Ascent: 875'
Leaders: Barry Whitby and Peter Houghton
