Range Walking Club
Sunday July 16th 2000 - North Wales - Bethesda

The walks for Sunday, 16 July take place around Bethesda and Carneddau in North Wales. The coaches will leave school at 0800 hrs prompt. There are toilets at the start of 3 walks only so a stop may be made en route. We plan to leave Bethesda by 1730 hrs, pick up the 'B' walkers at Llanfairfechan at 1745 hrs and be back in Formby by 1945 hrs. The cost of travel is £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and for students in full time education who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please return slips with cheques (NOT CASH) to the school office by Thursday, 6 July in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".

Boots are necessary on all walks.

'A' Walk
Three Peaks higher than any in England! From Ogwen Cottage (650603) we make the direct ascent of Pen ye ole Wen. This is an "invigorating", steep ascent with a little easy scrambling. A ridge walk to Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llewelyn takes us close to vertical cliffs and deep cwms. The going requires care over numerous loose boulders. We descend on a steep grass slope to Afon Llafar leading to a good path in to Bethesda. This walk involves too many risks in adverse weather. In such an event we will either do a straight ascent of Carnedd Llewelyn or merge with the 'B+' group.

'B'+ Walk
 This is a circular walk starting and finishing in Bethesda. As with all Welsh walks, the uphill bit begins as soon as you leave the coach but is on easy roads and paths until we escape the town via Gerlan. For a while we follow the Mon (River) Caseg but leave the path to climb on to the ridge to the north of the river and reach the high point for the day, Bera Bach (2648'). On a clear day the views of the other Carneddae will be a just reward. We will return along the ridge via Drosgl (2487') and Gyrn Wigau (2110'). Again, the views to the south west will be worth the effort.

'B' Walk
An attractive 'B' walk mostly on the North Wales Path with extensive views of the Menai Straits, including a visit to the noteworthy Aber waterfalls. The walk starts near Tal-y-Bont with a stiff climb on a pleasant country lane to reach the North Wales Path after which it is pleasant undulating walking, overlooking the coast. Shortly after lunch we reach Aber Falls and its pretty valley with the opportunity to visit a small stockholders' 'museum'. We then leave the North Wales Path with a final ascent to continue the walk across fields, descending to the small seaside resort of Llanfairfechan where there are facilities, and from where we will be collected by the coaches.

'C' Walk
Starting in Bethesda we head out of the village on a steady climb through open fields and farm land towards Moel Fabon. The climb is well worth it for the view from the top is of Anglesey and the surrounding area. Lunch on the top and then all downhill back to Bethesda over open fields, country lanes and part of the North Wales Path.
