- Range Walking Club
Sunday February 20th 2000 - Lake District - Ambleside
Sunday, 20 February 2000 marks the day when the annual "hotpot"
walks take place. This year we are returning to one of the favourite
places of the club. The walks take place around the beautiful area of
Ambleside in the Lake District and they are followed by a return to the
popular Lindale Inn for our "hotpot" meal. Four low-level walks
to build up your appetites are on offer. Variations may be made if weather
is adverse. A change of clothing and footwear would be recommended prior
to going for your repast. As usual the coaches will leave school at 0800
hrs prompt and should be back in Formby by 2030 hrs. The cost of travel is
£7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and for students in full time
education who were formerly pupils at Range High School. Please return
slips with cheques (NOT CASH) to the school office by Thursday, 10
February in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".
'A' Walk
From Ambleside we climb Loughrigg (1100') for an early lunch. Walking west
to Raven Crag we then turn north to the summit of Silver Howe (1290'). A
downhill walk into Grasmere completes the half circle. The return to
Ambleside passes Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, but no poetic diversions,
the hotpot beckons.

'B'+ Walk
Not every recce walk runs sweetly and this one turned "pear
shaped" in the second half The high point of the day is Wansfell Pike
(1581') which we can reach easily by a pretty route out of Amble side to
the south of the pike. The second target for the day, before returning in
good time to Ambleside, is the Kirkstone Pass Inn which we now know cannot
be reached easily by continuing on to Wansfell (1597') and then along a
ridge to the Kirkstone-Windermere road. An easier alternative route will
be found from Wansfell. Trust us!

'B' Walk
This circular walk loops north west of Ambleside around Grasmere Lake and
Rydal Water. We follow the Rydal River before climbing at a relaxed pace
to cross the summit of Loughrigg Fell (1100" with fine views of
Loughrigg Tarn and Elterwater. The descent to meet a minor road into
Grasmere village will be taken very carefully and gently. The return leg
follows a fairly level track from Dove Cottage to Rydal Mount
(Wordsworth's home) 'with views across Rydal Water. We skirt Rydal Park to
reach the main road leading back to Ambleside.

'C' Walk
This could be called the "Waterfalls Walk" and is at its best
after prolonged rain. It makes a very pleasant outing with varied scenery
whatever the conditions. Starting at Ambleside the walk takes us alongside
Stock Ghyll where there are a number of viewpoints for the falls. Leaving
the falls, we make our way to High Sweden Bridge by a roundabout route of
woodland, fell and field paths and some road walking. We cross High Sweden
Bridge (a very pleasant spot) and climb up to reach a track which takes us
down to Low Sweden Bridge (more waterfalls) and then we return to the car
park via a walk alongside the River Rothay.
