Range Walking Club
Sunday 27th September 1998 - North Wales-Beddgelert

Our first trip of the new programme is to North Wales. The coaches will leave school at 0800 hrs prompt. Unfortunately, no suitable toilet facilities are available en route to our starting point of the walks. However, facilities are available at Beddgelert for all walks except those on the 'A' walk - the latter will have the usual facilities of the countryside ('A' leaders' comment)! The walks, with the exception of the 'A' walk finish at Beddgelert from where the coaches leave at 1700 hrs. The 'A' party will rejoin the coach at Rhyd-Ddu. Please note that the cost of travel is now £7,00 for adults and £4,00 for children and students in full-time education and who were formerly Range High School pupils. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 17 September in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Walking boots are essential for all walkers.

'A' Walk
This walk starts at Talyum and includes the full length of the Nantlle Ridge. It is an excellent low level ridge walk with sheer drops, steep, exposed climbs and tricky descents - NOT for the inexperienced. The summits include Craig Cwm Silyn, Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd, Mynydd Drws-y-coed and Y Gam. Do not let the distance deceive you - it is a full 6-hour walk.

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 1000m
Leaders: Meirion Williams and Gordon Spence

'B'+ Walk
Starting at the car park by Llyn Dinn, the goal for the day is Cnicht (689m). We return to Beddgelert along the path of Aberglaslyn. Good boots are essential for the "off path" ascent of Cnicht and a torch is needed for the return path through a long tunnel.

Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 600m
Leaders: Rick Tynan and Dave Miles

'B' Walk
Although a little demanding for the start of the season this walk is full of variety, remains of old copper mine workings and varied woodland to rough undulating fell walking with high hills all around and fine scenery. Starting at Nantmor, we climb up Cwm Bychan past the remains of an aerial ropeway that once served nearby copper mines, eventually to descend to Llyn Dinas. Here we head Northeast along the lake for about half a mile before turning to head generally east to cross undulating fell to a road which we follow Southwest before turning off to follow undulating paths, past Caneddie Farm to Nantmor. Here we follow the track bed of an old narrow gauge railway through the tunnels (bring a torch) to Beddgelert.

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 400m
Leaders: Peter Houghton and Dave Griffiths

'C' Walk
Starting at Tremadoy we follow bridle paths and lanes to an old railway embankment leading to the Glaslyn Hotel Point Groesor for lunch. A short distance on the road takes us to open fields - be prepared for a mud bath - and along an old sea wall as we climb towards Nantmor returning to Beddgelert as 'B' walk.

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 100m
Leaders: Dave Willis and Ed McCluskey
