Range Walking Club
Sunday 27th June 1999-South Lake District-Broughton in Furness

On Sunday 27 June come with us and enjoy a day out in the peace and tranquility of one of the lesser known, but most beautiful, areas of the Lake District. The walks all end in Broughton in Furness but start en route to that town. As usual we leave school at 0800 hrs prompt and we hope to return there before 2000 hrs. A toilet only stop will be made on the M6 outward journey. The cost of travel is £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and students in full-time education who were formerly pupils of Range High School. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 17 June in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".

'A' Walk
An opportunity to sample a delightful section of the Cumbria Way and view the Lakeland fells from a different aspect than the usual 'A' walk. Starting at Gawthwaite (GR. 272848) we head north following the Cumbria Way (views of the Coniston mountains and beyond are exceptional given favourable weather conditions) until we reach Plain Riggs, some 1¼ miles from Torver. From here we turn southwest across Torver Low Common, making our way via rough ground, bridleways and footpaths to arrive at our destination, Broughton in Furness. (Pubs are open on Sundays here!)

Distance: 14 miles
Ascent: 2000'+
Leaders: Ann and Ian Mitchell

'B'+ Walk
A chance to savour part of the section of the Cumbria Way undertaken by the 'A' walkers. However, at beautiful Beacon Tarn we climb Blawith Fell before turning westwards up Hodge Wife Ghyll. Continuing more or less in this direction we pass over Green Moor and through Raisthwaite. Shortly after we meet up with the Path taken by the 'B' walk and the 'C' walk over Thornthwaite Latter Rigg then we turn south and, via field paths and bridle ways, we make our way back to Broughton in Furness.

Distance: 11 miles
Ascent: 1500'
Leaders: John Hughes and Arthur Jones

'B' Walk
A classic 'B' walk in beautiful countryside. We start at the same place as the 'C' walkers but immediately follow the contours round "Great Birney" for a short distance before making the relatively easy ascent to its summit (400'). Turning north-northeast we make a modest descent of 200' to "Little Burney". Continuing in a north-northeasterly direction via field paths we make for Tottlebank Height and then turn almost due west to climb 306' to the top of Blawith Knott (806') where excellent views through 360 degrees are to be had. Once again we turn north-northeast to make the descent to High Kep passing Lang Tarn (the smallest named tarn in the Lakes). Turning southwest we then proceed via fields and minor tracks to Yeat House and then follow the same paths as the 'C' walk back to Broughton in Furness. All in all a good walk with continuously changing views.

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 1000'
Leaders: John Rothwell and Dave Luty

'C' Walk
This walk starts at 600' above sea level on the A5902 between Beanthwaite and Gawthwaite finishing in Broughton in Furness at a little above sea level Heading north from the trunk road we follow a minor road for 2.1 miles to Giants Grave where we leave the road to climb onto Blawith Knott - a mere 33' and almost half the day's total - taken of course at an easy pace! On the Knott is the smallest named tarn in the Lakes, Lang Tarn. We then drop (not literally I hope) to High Kep and head in a southwesterly direction to Yeat House, the resident of which used to be a coast guard at Formby. Just south of here we take the footpath westward which passes Woodland Hall, over Thornthwaite Latter Rigg and continues into Broughton via Wall End. On the reccy we saw an adder, buzzards, wheatears and lovely views all the way round and with only 3 or 4 stiles to boot, we think this is a very pleasant walk

Distance: 7¼ miles
Ascent: 650'
Leaders: Eileen and Phil Morgan
