- Range Walking Club
- Sunday 18th July 1999-North
Wales-Snowdonia-Llanberis
This month's outing takes us to the Snowdonia National Park area of North
Wales on Sunday, 18 July. The walks are centered on Llanberis. There will
be no toilet stop en route as toilets are available at the coach park at
the Slate Museum, Llanberis. The 'A' and 'B+' walkers will then be taken
by coach from the coach park to the start of their walks. The 'B' and 'C'
walks start and finish at the coach park. Please note that there are
limited after-walk facilities at the coach park. However, reasonable
facilities exist 10 minutes away in Llanberis. The Tea Shop at the Quarry
Hospital and Mortuary closes at 1630 hrs. We expect to leave Llanberis at
17.30 hrs to arrive back at school no later than 2000 hrs. As usual we
leave school at 08.00 hrs prompt. The cost of travel is £7.00 for adults
and £4.00 for children and students in full-time education who were
formerly pupils of Range High School. Please return slips with cheque (NOT
CASH) to the school office by Thursday, 8 July in an envelope marked
"Range Walking Club".
'A' Walk
Not for the faint-hearted with a stiff scrambling climb to the exposed
ridge along Crib Goch. Starting from Pen y Pas (359m above sea level) we
ascend The Horns which takes us to the foot of the climb up and along Crib
Goch, on to Garnedd Ugain and thence to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)
1085m (3560') above sea level which you should see, cloud base permitting.
A stroll then follows the Snowdon Mountain Railway down to Llanberis and
to the coach park.
Distance: 9 miles
- Ascent: 2500'
- Leaders: John Roberts and Adrian Simmons
'B'+ Walk
Starting from Pen-y-Pas Youth Hostel we follow the Miners' Path to
reach the summit of Snowdon (1085m). On the way up there is a short
section of very steep scrambling but the rest of the climb is on good
paths with some exposure. At the summit cafe there will be an opportunity
for a well- earned cup of tea whilst admiring the panoramic views (if the
cloud base is above 1085m). The way down to Llanberis is via the track
that follows the course of the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
Distance: 8 miles
- Ascent: 2500'
- Leaders: David Poole and Steve Mcllraith
'B' Walk
Starting from the Slate Museum car park we follow the woodland trail past
the Quarry Hospital and Mortuary and on to reach the hamlet of Fachwen.
From here we trail through Padern Country Park to Brynrefail. The next
section follows a level disused railway line to Bro Rhythallt then uphill
on road to Bryn Bras Castle. We continue along this road past the slate
quarries at Cleggir and on through woods to Llanberis and a lakeside path
leading back to the coaches.
Distance: 9 miles
- Ascent: 800'
- Leaders: David Wake and John McEvoy

- 'C' Walk
This is a circular walk around Llyn Padern with spectacular views weather
permitting. Starting at the Welsh Slate Museum we make our way past the
Dinorwig Quarry Hospital and Mortuary (not in use - now a museum) and
through woods lining the valley. After a lunch break at the western end of
the lake we have a short steep climb which will be taken slowly and in
stages. This takes us to the hillside route by which we return via the tea
shops of Llanberis to our starting point.
Distance: 7 miles
- Ascent: 700'
- Leaders: John McKay and David Turton
