Range Walking Club

Sunday 25th April 1999 - Derbyshire - Buxton

April 1999 walks take us to the Peak District part of Derbyshire on Sunday, 25th in some of the most beautiful countryside of England. The walks are centred on Buxton. There will be no toilet stop until Buxton where the 'B' and 'C' walks will also be starting. The 'A' and 'B'+ parties will be taken on by coach to their starting points. All walks finish in Buxton. As usual the coaches will leave school at 0800 hrs prompt, returning to Formby around 1930 hrs. The cost of travel is £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children and students in full-time education and who were formerly Range High School pupils. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Friday, 16 April in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".

'A' walk
Starting from Danebower Quarries (Grid ref 401370) we descend to the River Dane and travel south past the Three Shires Stone and follow the Dane Valley Way to Gradhach Wood. Skirting The Roaches with their weird rock formations we pass Gibb Torr Rocks and head north-east past Thick Withins, ascending Edgetop with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Via a number of green roads we pass Howe Green and Brand Top on towards Stanley Moor Reservoir and descend through Grinlow Woods into Buxton.

'B'+ Walk
It's downhill all the way almost, starting from The Cat and Fiddle we drop down to the west side of Ernwood and Fernilee Reservoir. We then cross the Goyt Valley to Fernilee Village and then head south to Bunsal Cob, Wildmoorstone Brook, across the dismantled railway to Beet Wood and Watford Farm. Passing through a golf course we have a pleasant stroil through the park to the coaches in Buxton.

'B' Walk
Starting from the coach park we walk through the town park and out to Burbage. Crossing the dismantled railway we pass by Burbage Edge Plantation and descend Berry Clough to Goytsclough Quarry. Turning northwards we follow Goyts dough to Ernwood Reservoir. From here we turn east up Wild Moor to the dismantled railway, now an official wheelchair route. Following the railway to a tunnel entrance we turn south to Beet Wood and follow the 'B+' route into Buxton.

'C' Walk
From the centre of Buxton we make our way through the Pavilion Gardens. Then we head up a long, slow climb through Buxton Country Park, from the top of which we will be able to see Solomon's Temple. We then make our way past a reservoir and onto a dismantled railway before dropping down to Temple More and making our way back into Buxton.
