Our next trip takes us to beautiful Dentdale to
the east of the M6 in Cumbria. All walks start and finish in the
lovely village of Dent. There will be no toilet stop on the
journeys as such are provided for at Dent. There are plenty of
refreshment opportunities in Dent. As usual, the coaches will
leave school at 0800 hrs prompt and return there by 1930 hrs
approximately. The cost of travel is £6.00 for adults and £3.00
for children and students in full-time education and who were
formerly Range High School pupils. Please return slips with
cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 4 June in an
envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Walking boots
are essential for all walkers.
- 'A' Walk
- A superb round trip taking in some of the finest scenery
in Yorkshire. Weather permitting, views can be had to
Morecambe Bay, the Lakes and County Durham. Starting in
Dent village (GR 704872) we walk out along the Dales Way
to Deepdale. Here we begin the long steady climb to the
summit of Whernside (2420'). Leaving the top of the
hill by the west side, we descend into Kingsdale.
Following the green lane (in fact, mostly
brown and wet!) round High Pike we again climb, more
briskly this time, to the saddle between Great Coum and
Gragareth. A short walk brings us to the top of Great
Coum and thence on to Crag Hill. The descent from Crag
Hill via a real green lane and the picturesque
Flinters Gill brings us nicely into the back yard
of the Sun Inn in Dent.
-
- Distance: 13½ miles
- Ascent: 2700'
- Leaders: Bob Scurr and A N Other
-
- 'B'+ Walk
- From the car park in Dent we head southwest, climbing
about 700 ft (slowly!) to the top of Flinter's
Gill. At the junction with the "Occupation
Road" we turn southeast and follow this green lane
for about 3½ miles, sticking close to the contour line.
On reaching the minor road at the head of Deepdale we
turn south then east to climb steeply (and slowly!) to
the trig point on Whernside (2419') from which point
there are extensive views in all directions. The
remainder of the route is downhill all the way to Dent by
way of Whernside Tarns, the Craven Way Track and the
Dales Way.
-
- Distance: 11½ miles
- Ascent: 2000' (+8 stiles)
- Leaders: Dave Purdy and Glennis Poole
-
- 'B' Walk
- From Dent we climb up Flinter's Gill to reach a walled
track which we then foliow round to reach High Pike. We
now descend into Deepdale, crossing several streams as we
make our way via Mire Garth to Ri End. An up, down, up
stretch takes us to Laithbank, across the river and up to
Basic Busk. Excellent vie1 across to the start of the
walk, together with some interesting stiles are on offer
on the final part of the walk.
-
- Distance: 9¾ miles
- Ascent: 1500'
- Leaders: Barry Whitby and Peter Houghton
-
- 'C' Walk
- A varied walk that commences and ends alongside the river
with views over Dentdale sandwiched in between. From the
car park in Dent we foliow the river westward to Eliers
Ford where we climb gradually but unceasingly upwards,
passing the derelict Combe House before reaching
Barbondale Road. Views of Dentdale open up as we cross
South Lord's Land before a steepish descent down
Flinter's Gill towards Dent. A diversion at the end
allows us to complete the walk in a gentle fashion
alongside the river.
