District-Langdale
-
- Welcome, especially new members, to a new season. The
first walk, on Sunday 29, September, takes us to Langdale
in the heart of the Lake District. We leave school at
0800 hrs prompt and will have a toilet stop en route. It
is planned to commence the return journey at 1730 hrs and
should be back at school by 2000 hrs. The cost of travel
is now £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children
and students in full-time education. Please return slips
with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday,
19 September, in an envelope marked "Range Walking
Club". Walking boots are essential on all walks.
'A' Walk
Starting at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, we soon begin
the long, steep ascent of Bowfell (2960' - 900 m) by the
band, only deviating on to the climbers' traverse for the
final 300' of spectacular rock scenery. Having ascended
to Three Tarns we follow an excellent ridge walk along
the 5 crinkles, returning to
Langdale by Red Tarn.

- Distance: 9 miles
- Ascent: 3500'
- Leaders: Meirion Williams and Gordon Spence
'B'+ Walk
The high points of the walk are Pike O' Stickle and
Harrison Stickle. A short walk with a lot of ascent. We
have a flattish start along Mickleden Beck turning north
to climb Steake Gill. Following the Cumbria Way until the
pile of stones when we turn southeast and start to climb again. After Harrison Stickle we will descend to the car
park at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel.

- Distance: 8 miles
- Ascent: 2500'
- Leaders: Rick Tynan and Dave Miles
'B' Walk
A lovely circular walk with 2 fairly strenuous climbs in
the first half but offering superb viewpoints. Starting
at the New Hotel our route takes us westwards to the Old
Hotel and then south to climb up by Side Pike (1st climb)
and on to reach Blea Tarn. From here we make our way
eastwards and ascend Lingmoor Fell (2nd climb). Both
ascents will be taken at an easy pace. The main climbing
completed, we make our way to Little Langdale before
turning northwards to Elterwater. From here we follow the
Cumbria Way back to our starting point.
Distance: 8½ miles
- Ascent: 1300'
- Leaders: Keith Ellard and Dave Griffiths
'C' Walk
This is a pleasant introduction to the Club's 'C'
walks for 1996/7, following 2 rivers, passing 2 tarns and
visiting 2 waterfalls, all with varied terrain and
relatively little climbing. The walk initially follows
the Cumbria way from Elterwater village to Skelwith,
alongside Elterwater. There is the opportunity for a
cafe/toilet break at Skelwith before we head, through
farmland and woods, to Colwith Force. Following the track
through Little Langdale we eventually climb gently to the
beauty spot of Blea Tarn before descending to the New
Dungeon Ghyll Hotel.
Distance: 7½ miles
- Ascent: 500'
- Leaders: Ken Lamb and A N Other
