Range Walking Club

Sunday 24th November 1996-North Wales-Prestatyn

Sunday, 24 November takes us to the historic north coast of Wales with 3 walks taking in Offa's Dyke footpath and the 'C' walk Rhuddlan Castle. There could be striking views, weather permitting. There will be a toilet stop at Mold and all walks finish in Prestatyn where usual facilities are available. We leave school at 0800 hrs prompt to ensure as early a start to walks as possible in view of the short hours of daylight and will return (hopefully) no later than 1930 hrs. The cost of travel is now £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children and students in full-time education. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday. 14 November. in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Walking boots are essential for all walks.

'A' Walk
After a steady climb from Dre-Goch we meet the Offa's Dyke path going past Grove Hall to Bodfari. A second breathtaking climb takes us by fields, roads and paths to Cefndu via Sodom. A brisk walk leads to Rhuallt. probably for lunch. From there the Clywds strike back with a short, steep climb which ultimately meanders by an erratic. undulating route to the Cliff Walk overlooking our destination, Prestatyn.

'B'+ Walk
Starting from Bodfari with a steady climb past an ancient hill fort, we reach Offa's Dyke Path which we follow past Sodom. The Path then undulates until descending into Rhuallt. A further short climb takes us back onto the top of the Clwydian Ridge. Then. via fields and a variety of stiles, we pass Marian Frith, Marian Mill. along the ridge overlooking Rhyl Meliden and Prestatyn. before descending into Prestatyn.

'B' Walk
This walk starts at Tremeirchion across fields gently rising to pick up Offa's Dyke Path to descend into Rhualit. The walk then follows the route of the B+ walk. The ridge overlooking Rhyl and Prestatyn should offer long range views along the north Wales coast but it is very exposed to winds from the Irish Sea. Anyone undertaking a study of field stiles should attend this walk!

'C' Walk
A demanding walk across mainly arable farmland. with an interesting variety of stiles and gates. starting at Rhuddlan Castle (closed). We head east before turning north and climbing steadily but slowly to the village of Cwm (Blue Lion Inn). This is followed by a short, sharp climb before passing Maes Hiwadugg to the disused railway line and into Prestatyn.
