Range Walking Club

Sunday 15th June 1997-North Lakes-Pooley Bridge

 

The walks on Sunday, 15 June, are in the North Lakes area east of Ullswater and all terminate at Pooley Bridge where there are ample hostelries. As usual the coaches leave school at 0800 hrs prompt and there will be a short toilet stop en route. The return journey will start at 1730 hrs, and we should be back in Formby by 2000 hrs. The cost of travel is £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children and students in full-time education. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 6 June, in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Walking boots are essential for all walks.

'A' Walk

The walk starts at Shopbeck Gate on the A6 (G.R 556187) and proceeds westerly over Out Scar, descending into the Lowther Valley at Bampton Grange. (An early stop at The Crown and Mitre?) Continuing south westerly we start to climb towards Bampton Common above Haweswater. At G.R 463160 the route turns north-west to reach High Street at Wether Hill. High Street is then followed via Loadpot Hill, Lord's Seat and The Cockpit to our destination in Pooley Bridge.

'B'+ Walk

Starting by Clifton Hall on the A6 we cross farmland to reach the grounds of Lowther Park. After crossing the parkland we pass through the picturesque village of Askham before the gentle ascent of Askham Fell. From the summit we descend under the spectacular crags of Barton Fell before reaching the shore of Ullswater, north of Howtown. We return to Pooley Bridge along the lakeside.

'B' Walk
From Pooley Bridge we head south east, slowly ascending Askham Fell above Ullswater. Leaving the view of the lake behind us we pass through Helton, cross the River Lowther and proceed on into Whale. Following the river north along the western edge of the Lowther estate, we again cross the river and enter the attractive village of Askham. The final leg of the journey takes us over Heughscar Hill and back to Pooley Bridge via Winder Hall Farm.

'C' Walk

Having left the coach at Hackthorpe we head first for the village of Lowther and then to Newtown, but which are under English Heritage protection and were built for the Lowther Estate. We then take the which passes in front of the impressive, although ruined, Lowther Castle before descending to the rive bridge at Askham. There will be time to look round the village before we follow the river south to Whale and then cross it to reach Helton. We now head up and on to Moor Divock with its standing stones an cairn circles. Having reached the largest of these, The Cockpit, we start our gradual descent to Pooley Bridge with fine views across Ullswater to the Helvellyn range.
