Sunday 20th April 1997-The Dark Peak District-Hathersage

 

The Dark Peak is our destination on 20 April 1997 from the Snake Pass to Hathersage where all walks finish. As usual the coaches leave school at 0800 hrs prompt returning from Hathersage at 1730 hrs and arriving back in Formby by 1930 hrs. There will be a short toilet stop, particularly for the 'B' group in Glossop. There are toilets at the start of the other walks. The cost of travel is £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children and students in full-time education. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 10 April, in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Walking boots are essential for ALL walks. There is every likelihood that on a trial basis a different coach company will be used for this outing.

'A' Walk
Starting from the Visitor Centre near the Derwent Dam (map ref 173 893), we go north alongside the lake through Hancock Wood before turning east to go up onto the Derwent Edge where we pass several limestone outcrops on a beautiful ridge walk. After passing Wheelstones we go past several grouse butts as we follow the path east to Moscar from where we go along Stanage Edge to High Neb. From High Neb we descend the path known locally as Jacobs Ladder, pass North Lees Hall (17th Century) and follow Baulk Lane back to Hathersage.

'B'+ Walk
We set out northwards from Hathersage across fields to North Lees Hall (17th Century) and then climb towards the Stanage Edge via the old formerly paved Jacobs Ladder. Following a path below the Edge we head north to High Neb and Crow Chin where we climb to the Edge itself passing mysterious abandoned cut millstones. Turning south we have 3 miles of excellent edge walking with views of Main Tor, Win Hill Pike, etc. Finishing the Edge we cross to the Duke of Rutland Drive running at the foot of the Burbage Rocks. Just when we think the walk a bit too easy, we head across a packhorse bridge and see formidable climbs ahead - Carl Wark and Higger Tor, 2 large rocky outcrops. After these we drop (!) across fields and via lanes back to Hathersage and tea.

'B' Walk

Starting from the Snake Road (A57. 162 887) we cross the River Ashop and climb through woodland to pick up Roman Road (course of) and then gently climb through open moorland to Whinhill Pike, our high point of the day. Views from here include Ladybower Reservoir, Edale Valley and Castleton cement works! We descend all the say down to Barnford Mills on the River Derwent. From here undulating fields and tracks take us to Hathersage.

'C' Walk
An interesting circular walk based on Hathersage. We start by climbing steadily through the undulating the and woods of the White Peak area to Abney in the morning before turning west and descending across open moorland of the Dark Peak area and crossing the River Derwent by the stepping stones into Hathersage.
