Range Walking Club
Sunday 24th September 1995-Anglesey

Welcome back to all members and a warm welcome also to new members. A gentle re-introduction is the order of the day for September's walk on Sunday, 24th. The first time off the mainland into pastures new and beach are novel introductions to the club outings. Indeed tide tables were needed for the reconnoiter-a first in the history of the club. Anglesey is our destination and the walks afford members superb views across the Menai Straits to Snowdon and Lleyn Peninsula, not to mention a meeting with the patron saint of love and a visit to Pilots Cottages. A truly varied environment. Another unusual feature is no degrees of ascent are present on all walks. The coaches will leave school at 0800 hours prompt and expect to return by 1930 hrs. The cost of travel is £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children and students in full-time education. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 14 September in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Please ensure cheques are signed.

'A' and 'B'+ Walks
Starting 2½ miles south of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, on the A4080, we follow a series of green lanes and field paths to meet the sea at Barras. Next is a 1¼ mile walk along the sea front before turning inland to Dwyran. A short stretch on the road leads to Newborough Warren Nature Reserve and from here the path skirts the forest to the sandy beach of Llanddwyn Bay. A walk along the beach takes us to Llanddwyn Island and its many interesting features. Retracing our steps to the forest we follow the Nature Trail through to Newborough where the coach awaits. Shorts would not be advisable for the first part of the walk due to thistles etc. Given good weather, views of Wales are extensive. Binoculars would be an advantage to view the bird life, seals, etc.

Distance: 13 miles (opt-outs at 11½ miles)
Ascent: Zero
Leaders: Ian Mitchell, Alan Clarkson and John Hughes

'B' Walk
At the village of Dwyran we start with a walk along the road for ¾ mile. We then make our way via dunes to the magnificent sweeping bay (2½ miles long) at Maeltraeth. The beach walk takes us to the headland at Newborough Warren to meet the patron saint of love, St Dwynwen. There are historic ruins to investigate including Pilots Cottage which incorporates a mini-museum. Bird watchers (feathered variety) will also be catered for. We then follow a nature trail through the forest to Newborough and the coaches.

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: Zero
Leaders: Patrick Ferguson and Phil Morgan

'C' Walk
This is a splendid circular walk encompassing sandy trails, beach, Cornish-type coves and green forest paths. Given kind weather, views of the Snowdon Range and Lleyn Peninsula will be superb. Starting at Llyn Rho Ddu (G.R. 426647) we trek southwest with Newborough Forest on our right. At the beach we turn westerly and walk to Llanddwyn Island where we should have plenty of time for lunch plus exploring this fascinating islet with its old pilot's cottages/disused lighthouse, etc. We then return northeast through the forest to Newborough for tea/coffee at the "White Horse Inn". PS Don't forget your binoculars, bird/flower books and camera!

Distance: 6½ miles
Ascent: Negligible
Leaders: Bob Hutt and John Rothwell
