- Range Walking Club
- Sunday 19th November 1995-Peak
District-Hayfield
-
- The November walk on Sunday, 19th, and takes us to the Hayfield
area of the Peak District. Our walks this month revolve
around the village of Hayfield and not Edale as
previously suggested. Hayfield lies at the west side of
the Kinder plateau and is the centre of some superb
walking country, rarely visited by the club. There will
be a brief toilet stop in Glossop on the outward journey.
A cafe (The Twenty Trees - opposite the church, by the
flyer in Hayfield) will be open at the end of the walks
and there is a pub opposite. As usual we depart school at
0800 hours prompt The cost of travel is £4.00 for adults
and £2.00 for children and students in full-time
education. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to
the school office by Thursday, 9 November, in an envelope
marked "Range Walking Club". Please ensure
cheques are signed.
'A' Walk
Starting just South of Glossop (036922) we climb
south-southeast to Harry's Hut and then east across the
moor, passing extensive aircraft wreckage, to Mill Hill.
Then south east and a short stiff pull onto Kinder
Scouts' rim which we follow south east to the downfall,
south-southwest to Kinder Low and then east to the
Woolpacks (091869). The landscape of the plateau is
strange and grotesque and unlike any other walking
territory the club visits. Turning back west we contour
round to Swines' Back, pick up the bridle path for a
while, swing north to the Kinder reservoir and then west
to Hayfield. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

'B'+ Walk
This circular walk starts and finishes at Hayfield and
follows well trodden paths through the countryside lying
between the A624 and the Kinder plateau to the east of
it. From Hayfield we will walk generally southwards via
the Ashes, South Head Farm and Shire Oaks to Breckend
before turning north again by way of Andrews Farm and
Coldwell Clough.

-
- 'B' Walk
An undulating, circular walk involving three
moderate climbs that will be taken at an easy pace.
Leaving Hayfield by the Snake Path we cross the grouse
moor above the town. Descending to the reservoir we
follow a riverside path and several farm tracks prior to
climbing to a viewpoint above Coldwell Clough. Tb final
ascent of the day commences at Peep-O-Day and provides
views of New Mills to the west before we meander on to
Birch Vale and pick up the Sett Valley Trail back to
Hayfield. This varied walk offers spectacular views of
the Sett Valley and the High Peak District and comes
highly recommended by the leaders.
Distance: 9 miles
- Ascent: 1350'
- Leaders: Mike Wood and Ray Webb
'C' walk
From Hayfield we follow the River Kinder upstream to the
Kinder Reservoir. We now climb onto White Brow where we
will be rewarded with some fine views across the
reservoir to Kinder Downfall. Our route now takes us on a
well-defined track over open moorland to Carr Meadows on
the Glossop Road. From here we head towards Lantern Pike
and then return to Hayfield via the Sett Valley Trail.
This walk has slightly more climbing than
normal but we have plenty of time to complete it at a
slow pace.
Distance: 7¼ miles
- Ascent: 790'
- Leader: Barry Whitby
