Range Walking Club

Sunday 17th March 1996-North Wales-Conwy

 

This month's walks on Sunday, 17 March are based around the town of Conwy on the North Wales Coast. Famous for its splendid castle, it also marks the Eastern end of the Carneddau range of mountains and the views everywhere are magnificent. There will be a toilet stop at Colwyn Bay. The 'B' and 'B'+ parties will alight at Conwy, the 'C' party at Penmaenmawr followed by the 'A' party at Aber. As usual we depart school at 0800 hours prompt and we will leave Conwy for the return journey at 1730 hours. The coaches will be in the car park reached through the castle arch (781774). The cost of travel is £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children and students in full-time education. Please return slips with cheque (not cash) to the school office by Thursday, 7 March, in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club".

'A' Walk
A long and hard walk but with some of the most spectacular scenery in North Wales. From Aber (655726) we head south to the top of the mighty Aber Falls and then follow Afton Goch deep into its catchment bowl before climbing to Carnedd Uchaff (3037'). Turning northeast we now bounce along the ridge to Foel Fras (3091') and then to Drum (2529'). Shortly afterwards we leave the ridge to descend to the Roman Road at 713719 and then skirt around Tal-y-Fan and eventually to Conwy Mountain before descending to Conwy itself.

'B'+ Walk
We start our circular walk at Conwy Castle and follow the North Wales coast path westwards, firstly along the estuary and then to the top of Conwy Mountain. From here there are extensive views of the coast, Anglesey and the Conwy Valley. The route then turns south and follows hill tracks and paths on the open mountain. It is varied and undulating and always scenic, passing stone circles, ruins, the ancient isolated church of Llangelynin and a nature reserve, before passing through the village of Henryd. After a short walk on minor roads we make our way back on field tracks which overlook the Conwy Valley.

'B' Walk
A circular walk that keeps Conwy and-or its river in view for most of the day and on which a variety of terrain is encountered. After a riverside start, the party ascends the lower slopes of Conwy Mountain before moving on to moorland and field footpaths. Some road walking is necessary through farms and villages as the party makes its way in an anti-clockwise direction back to Conwy.

'C' Walk
This short but challenging 'C' walk has more climbing than normal but offers some excellent views in return. The pace will be slow with frequent stops being made. We leave the coach near Penmaenmawr and head for the mountain road to climb and contour round Foel Lus. A steady descent on good paths takes us via Capelulo to the Sychnant Pass. Our next climb takes us to a bridle path which guides us to the lower end of the Conway Mountain ridge and extensive views over the Conway Estuary. We enter Conway along the Morfa promenade. NB If we are unlucky with the weather the first climb will be omitted from the walk.
