District-Windermere
-
- Welcome to 1996 and a happy new year to you all. Sunday
21 January takes us to the South Lake District.
Interesting walks on the hills to the east of Windermere
take us through a variety of beautiful scenery with many
hidden surprises. Views in all directions from the high
points are exceptional given good weather. All walks
finish in Bowness where there are numerous teashops, etc.
Please note that due to school holidays time for
returning slips is curtailed this month. As usual we
depart school at 0800 hrs prompt returning by 1930 hrs.
There will be a toilet stop on the outward journey at the
Burton Services on the M6. The cost of travel is £4.00
for adults and £2.00 for children and students in
full-time education. Please return slips with cheque (not
cash) to the school office by Thursday, 11 January, in an
envelope marked "Range Walking Club". Please
ensure cheques are signed.
'A' Walk
The walk starts near Newby Bridge, G.R 383850. A
gradual ascent through Stavely Forest takes us to a view
point and then on to Gummer's How at 1054' which is the
highest point of the day. Rarely does the route take us
more than a mile from Lake Windermere but continually
twists and turns its way north, taking in all the high
points on the way, the last one being Brant Fell (629')
where, on a good day, you can see the panorama of the
Lake District. Then it's a short descent into Bowness
where the coaches await.
Distance: 12½ miles
- Ascent: 1850'
- Leaders: Ian Mitchell and Alan Clarkson
'B'+ Walk
We start at Fell Foot (383869) and walk up the road to
take the path to the summit of Gummer's How (1054'). This
is a rather challenging start to the walk but it will be
taken at an appropriate pace and the views are superb if
the weather is kind. We leave Gummer's How and make our
way via Blake Holme Plantation to another superb view
point, Moor How (733'). From here we descend and follow
the road which skirts the Great Tower Scout Camp. We then
follow paths through woods and fields to a final
surprise, Brant Fell (629'), another superb view point on
the edge of Bowness itself yet very rarely visited. Our
route then takes us through more fields and into Bowness.
Distance: 10 miles
- Ascent: 1500'
- Leaders: Arthur Jones and John Hughes
'B' Walk
This walk starts approximately 6 miles south of
Bowness and has a gradual ascent through Blake Holme
Plantation and continues steadily up to reach the top of
Moor How at 733'. From here good views can be expected
given the weather. The route then continues towards
Bowness going past Great Tower Plantation and the Ghyl
Head Reservoir on country lanes and footpaths. Excursion
to the top of Brant Fell (629') is an option to be taken
on the day, given time and suitable weather.
Distance: 9 miles
- Ascent: 900'
- Leaders: Phil Morgan and Dave Luty
'C' walk
This is a lovely varied walk with fabulous views over
Windermere to the mountains beyond. Starting in
Windermere we make a gentle climb up Orrest Head taking
in the views as we go. From the summit we descend
northwards before swinging along varied tracks we make
our second gentle ascent up School Knott and have lunch
by a small tarn. From here we follow the Dales Way into Bowness-on-Windermere.
Distance: 7½ miles
- Ascent: 650'
- Leaders: John Rothwell and Bob Hutt
