1995-Christmas walk-Cheshire-Northwich
When Dave Luty suggested this walk near Northwich, the
thought of an industrial background did not inspire
uncontrollable glee. However, the 'reccy' has revealed a
very pleasant walk indeed - just the right one to walk
off the Christmas excesses, with a cosy hostel to put
them back on again!
The walk starts (and hopefully ends) at the Marbury
Country Park (G.R 36523765) in the car park NOT the
nursery half a mile south of Comberbach (toilets
available). We leave the Park and, crossing pastureland,
skirt the north of Budworth Mere and head to Great
Budworth, a gem of a village. We continue generally
south-westerly to Pick Mere and then into Wincham. A mile
or so along the road takes us to the Trent and Mersey
Canal and lunch at "The Salt Barge" (it's on
terra ferma). When members have had enough of that, and
hopefully before dark, we stagger back onto the towpath
(very good conditions) which we follow for nearly 2
miles. This is a rewarding part of the walk. The rural
views are typically "Cheshire" and the
"glimpse" of an industrial landscape includes
the Anderton Lift, an outstanding piece of our heritage
which, it is hoped, the lottery people hear about and
give the money to restore it. Watch out for the
kingfisher on the canal. From Anderton we head across
fields back to our cars. Boots are essential.
